Can We Overcome Racism—in the church???

This is the question when the hit radio soap opera
The Bold and the Sanctified®
storms the stage on Saturday, September 24th at 8 P.M.
at the Byham Theater.

Heard in over 30 markets across the country, The Bold and the Sanctified® is a story of love, compromise, betrayal and survival all in the most complex organization in the world: The Church.

Returning to the stage after a sellout performance in 2011, this new play will tackle one of the most complex and polarizing topics of the day: RACE.

The drama begins with a small 'black' church and a small 'white' church combining congregations for financial reasons. Racial conflict and tension ensue from the get-go. From the choir to the pulpit to even the usher board – EVERYTHING is affected by the union, and a question looms throughout the entire play: "Can they make it work?" As they contemplate the answer, audience members will experience laughter, singing, and some surprising twists and turns. As serious as the subject is, this play explores with comedy.

“I always hear people say the church is silent on issues of race,” says writer/producer Sherri Lynn. “I don’t believe that’s true. I think we speak volumes. With our congregations and segregated music, we are screaming loud and clear: ‘WE DO NOT CONSIDER THIS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE SO DON’T LOOK TO US FOR ANSWERS.’ What a terrible message for believers in Jesus to send.”

Sherri Lynn is also the producer/co-host of “The Brant Hansen Show.”

“It’s interesting,” she continues. “When we talk about race on the show, the #1 question we get from listeners is ‘how should unity work/what would it look like?’” Sherri decided to take that question and depict what intentional racial unity would actually look like in the four walls of the church.

When you take two different cultures, shove them in a building together, and don’t let them leave, it’s bound to be one hell of a mess—at least at first. That’s what this play illustrates, and you won’t want to miss the laughter, the music, and the outcome.
