September is National Recovery Month!
6 Ways You Can Celebrate in Your Community
Did you know that September is National Recovery Month?

Recovery Month was created 30 years ago by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover.

During this month, many prevention, treatment and recovery programs, and service providers across the country find creative ways to share their successes and information with neighbors, families, and friends with the goal of promoting recovery and recovery programs.

Of course, we think the best way to celebrate Recovery Month is to join us at our 2019 SMART Recovery National ConferenceBut, if you're unable to join us, here are some other ways you can celebrate at home or in your local community.

A New Look at the Stages of Change
Hear from the Co-Creator of the Stages of Change at the
2019 SMART Recovery National Conference!
All individuals who change problematic behavior owe a debt of gratitude to the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change, developed and refined since the late 1970s by, among others, Carlo C. DiClemente, Ph.D., ABPP.

The five stages of change are:
  1. Precontemplation
  2. Contemplation
  3. Preparation
  4. Action
  5. Maintenance
Learn more about what happens at each of these stages and how someone might work their way through them in this recent guest blog post, provided by David Koss of Capital SMART.

We are pleased to welcome co-creator of the Stages of Change, Carlo DiClemente, Ph.D., ABPP, as keynote speaker at the 2019 SMART Recovery National Conference in September.

SMART Recovery Featured in Cigna Podcast
Freedom From Addiction, with Board President Bill Greer
SMART Recovery was recently featured in Cigna’s Behavioral Awareness Series, in an episode entitled Freedom From Addiction.

In this interview with Cigna, Board President Bill Greer explains that recovery is so much more than stopping your addictive behavior. It is creating a new life full of new opportunities. Bill says, “Recovery has many different meanings, some of which are stopping the challenging behavior. Long term recovery requires us to build a new life, recovering what we lost, the person or self we were before addiction started controlling your life.”

Learn more about SMART Recovery and its 4-Point Program® in this interview.
