NGLA Annual Conference
We are excited to return to Hartford, CT for the 2017 Annual Conference from February 23-26.

Conference Registration
Regular registration ends on February 17. On-site registration will be available after this date.

Don’t forget to renew your NGLA subscription prior to registering. This allows you to get access to educational resources, newsletters, programming throughout the year, and the discounted conference rate!

If you were unaware of who was attending at the time of filling out your registration form, please make sure to e-mail registration@ngla.org to change your information or student attendees.
Advanced Leadership Summit
Join NovakTalks CEO, Kim Novak & lead facilitator, Joshua Welch, for the 3rd year of the NGLA Advanced Leadership Summit, scheduled to take place Saturday, February 25 from 10:15am–4:30pm.*

The Advanced Leadership Summit is designed to provide an opportunity for student leaders who have taken part in NGLA or other significant leadership educational programs to drill deeper into meeting the challenges of leading. Leading through issues necessitates that leaders approach challenges as critical thinkers that seek to identify the real problem while shifting focus off of incidents to issues in order to identify the best course of action in their work. By utilizing a thinking & planning process that necessitates thoroughly evaluated and thoughtfully considered factors that contribute to any given problem, task, or issue, participants will be able to meet the challenges of leading their chapters or communities while continuing their own development as leaders.

Advisors Academy
NGLA’s award-winning Advisors Academy brings together volunteer, alumni, and faculty advisors from around the region to share best practices and hear from industry leaders on issues affecting higher education and the interfraternal community. All sessions are facilitated by the staff of RISE Partnerships and funded by a generous grant from Phi Mu Delta.

Join us Saturday, February 25, 9:30am-4:30pm to learn:
  • What life looks like through the eyes of today’s college student
  • How to lead conversations with students about difficult topics
  • Multiple options for handling problematic situations
  • How to work with campus, headquarters, and umbrella association partners
  • Techniques for setting expectations and maintaining accountability
The meeting room limits us to 50 participants, so register early before sessions sell out! The program speaks specifically to graduate or alumni volunteer advisors of fraternity and sorority chapters. It is relevant to those who advise a single functional area (e.g. recruitment, finances, member development, etc.), to general chapter advisors, and to regional advisors who work directly with students. Advisors who are not members of a fraternity/sorority are encouraged to attend, as non-members have found the program especially worthwhile. The program may not be relevant to fraternity/sorority professionals on campus or headquarters or to those who do not work directly with students.

Backpack Drive
Did you know that when most children enter foster care they receive two trash bags to carry their belongings?

Let’s try to change this!

We are excited to announce that this year we will be doing a backpack drive for the CT Department of Children and Families. This will include a competition to see what delegation donates the most backpacks.

Your delegation can participate by bringing (new) backpacks for any/all ages filled with one or more items from the list below to the conference. Prizes will be announced in February but start your collection now!!!

Annual Conference Silent Auction
Great news! The NGLA Silent Auction Donation page is live and ready to accept your donations! Get involved at #NGLA by donating items or experiences to the Silent Auction! Friday Night Entertainment

Trivia night will be making a return in Hartford on Friday night with our guest host, Dave Conner! We will also have a great dance party as well and everyone is more than welcome to check both out!
T-Shirt Swap
Bring a shirt, take a shirt! Don’t forget to start saving those leftover fraternity/sorority event t-shirts for the annual t-shirt swap! This event will occur on Friday night.

Order of Omega Initiation
Order of Omega recognizes individuals for leadership, scholarship and service. The Board of Directors would like to invite any professional staff, graduate students, national officers or presenters to become honorary initiates. Your time and dedication to making a difference to the fraternal movement is appreciated and should be recognized through this honor. Please join us on Saturday, February 25 at 6:30pm in the Marriot Conference Room 7. Please arrive 10 minutes before actual time to complete paperwork for your certificate. The honorary fee of $20.00 will be collected at the ceremony.
The Order of Omega Case Study Competition provides undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals with an opportunity to use their problem solving skills to consider and address an issue related to fraternities and sororities. The competition provides them with the opportunity to further develop skills in the areas of creative problem solving, public speaking, collaboration, and strategic thinking. As the sponsor of the competition, Order of Omega provides a monetary prize for the first, second, and third place teams. Teams of two may sign up at the Order of Omega table in the exhibitor hall, and must attend the Case Study Orientation on Friday, February 24 from 5:15-6:15pm in Marriot Conference Room 4. The competition will take place on Saturday, February 25 from 2:15-5:30pm. Questions can be directed to Sara Diem.

Request for Cultural Competency Programming Proposals: Due March 1st

NGLA desires to help support cultural competency development among fraternity and sorority members across the northeast. We are seeking proposals for a comprehensive program that helps students learn to understand and navigate topics such as diversity, inclusion, and social justice. The final product may include the development of resources, standalone education either in person or virtually, and/or programming that has the ability to be implemented either at the annual conference, on member campuses, and/or for personal development.

If you would like to share the RFP with any other colleagues that you believe may be interested in submitting materials for consideration please feel free to contact Cultural Competence Workgroup Chair, Victoria Lopez-Herrera.

February Volunteer of the Month – Colleen Knopeck
Colleen Knopeck has been serving as the editor for the NGLA newsletter for over a year. In that time, she has become an integral part of the communications team. She works each month to compile the articles and announcements for the newsletter that is sent out to the members of NGLA. Without her effort, communication about the conference, year round programming, and articles for the benefit of our members, would not be able to be shared so concisely.
