Recognising NCAT's contribution to best practice guidelines
Members of NCAT’s Guardianship Division led the completion of a national project that developed best practice guidelines to encourage people with a decision-making disability to meaningfully participate in Tribunal proceedings.

Guidelines for Australian Tribunals: Maximising the participation of the Person in guardianship proceedings [PDF 3.4MB] was released by the Australian Guardianship and Administration Council (AGAC) in July 2019. Over 200 individuals and organisations were invited to comment on the draft guidelines and 39 submissions were received.

The Guidelines are intended to provide a model of best practice to inform and assist Tribunal Members in guardianship proceedings. They guide Australian Tribunals about practical steps that can be taken to ensure people with decision-making disabilities can fully participate in Tribunal hearings and the decision-making process.

The full report is available on the AGAC website. Many thanks to the NCAT Members who contributed their time and expertise developing these Guidelines.
