NORWALK MARITIME GARAGE GALLERY

MIGRATING COLORS

JANUARY 20

The City of Norwalk Parking Authority’s Maritime Garage Gallery is inviting submissions from artists 18 and over for its winter exhibit that will run from February 19 through May 10, 2019. In its Migrating Colors exhibit, the Maritime Garage Gallery is celebrating the abundance of colors that awaken viewers to color’s brilliant presence, especially during the winter months when the colors we choose to surround ourselves with can significantly affect our mood. The Gallery is seeking works inspired by color, its effects, meaning, value, and playfulness. Clever uses of medium, with the exception of pedestal sculpture, and interpretations on the subject are welcome. Nadia Martinez will be curating the exhibit. Art can be inspiring or dismissed, beautiful or ugly, worthwhile or worthless, attentive to the world in which it is made or created seemingly in a world all its own. One thing it almost always does is to promote a discussion, a conversation. For this year’s Member Show, Conversations, The Ridgefield Guild of Artists (RGOA) want to invite art that will promote a conversation, be it about technique or material, style or subject matter, ideas that matter deeply to the artist or ideas that may inflame the viewer. We welcome all forms of expression, so long as they promote thought-provoking conversations. This exhibition is open to all members. The RGOA welcomes new members and renewals. Artists may submit up to 2 works. Fees are $15 for first entry and $10 for second entries payable at registration. Drop off and registry of entries takes place on Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26, 12 to 4 pm. Details here.

SILVERMINE GUILD

PAPER 2019

FEBRUARY 7

Silvermine's PAPER 2019 exhibition will feature pieces by artists working in paper broadly considered. Submissions may include prints, drawings, photographs, artists’ books, handmade paper as well as three-dimensional works made with paper. The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the vitality, diversity, sense of experimentation and skillful execution and the many ways in which contemporary artists approach this material. Curator: Jennifer Farrell, Associate Curator Drawings and Prints, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. Awards: Best in Show - awards an artist a solo exhibition at Silvermine Arts Center with a $1,000 stipend for show related expenses. The Juror has additional awards to give at her discretion. To enter: complete the PAPER 2109 online application on Slideroom. Entry fee is a flat $45 for up to 5 entries. To be considered for the Best in Show Prize, artists are required to enter a minimum of three works. FEBRUARY 8

The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, was founded to represent the importance of drawing as a process, skill, and discipline, and as a continuing viable product of the creative fine art and design fields. It has incorporated drawing-based programming, including education (Drawing Center), publications (INDA), and gallery exhibits into the broader spectrum of its projects. It now presents an open call for artwork exploring contemporary drawing. DRAWN seeks to survey and present the broad scope of drawing being made today. Artists are invited to submit works of drawing in any medium relevant to the practice (including non-traditional approaches), any style, and any genre (fine art, illustration, design, conceptual, realism, etc.). Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental. Past exhibit and book participants are welcome and encouraged to submit. The annual Manifest Grand Jury Prize will result in the awarding of one significant cash prize ($2500) to a single work selected as the 'best of the entire season'. ROWAYTON ARTS CENTER

PHOTOGRAPHY, SCULPTURE & FIBER ARTS

FEBRUARY 7

For the first time, the Rowayton Arts Center (RAC) will include fiber art as a category for an exhibition in the gallery. Online submissions are now accepted as an OPEN Call to Artists for the Photography, Sculpture and Fiber Art juried show at RAC from March 10, 2019 to April 6, 2019. The show is open to all artists interested in exhibiting their artwork. To submit pieces for consideration, please visit rowaytonarts.org/entries/#dashboard. Deadline is February 7, 2019. For complete prospectus, click here. The juror, Michael Shapiro, is a collector of vintage and contemporary photography. He became established as a dealer in 1980 after leaving a curatorial position at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California. His nonprofit work includes eight years as a board member of the Ansel Adams Center/Friends of Photography, as well as serving on the boards of San Francisco Art Dealer’s Association and the San Francisco Waldorf School. UCONN STAMFORD GALLERY

NATIONAL ENCAUSTIC EXHIBITION

FEBRUARY 7

The National Encaustic Exhibition will be held at the University of Connecticut Stamford Gallery, March 4 - April 11, 2019. The University has issued an open call for entries to all artists living in the U.S. Works in encaustic and/or encaustic combined with any medium, 2D and 3D, are eligible. Artwork must have been completed within the last three years and must not exceed 36” in any dimension, including frame. A non-refundable entry fee of $25 is charged each entrant, which entitles the artist to a maximum of three entries. Entries are submitted via email to: doart247@gmail.com. Attached files must be in jpeg format, minimum 1,200 pixels on the longest side, and under 5 MB. Each entry to be labeled: number_lastname_title_medium_ size_year. Attach a resume or cv with email. DARIEN ARTS CENTER

PIC DARIEN

FEBRUARY 14

The Darien Arts Center has announced the return of its annual smartphone photo contest, Pic Darien, which will be accepting entries here through Feb. 14th. Adults (18 and up) and Students (17 and under) may submit their smartphone photos for cash prizes in 6 categories: People and Pets; Landscape, Seascape, Nature; Travel; Food and Drink; Abstract; and Love, Anguish and Triumph. There are cash prizes in each category of $100 First Place and $50 Second Place for both adults (18 & up) and students (17 & under). The new category of Love, Anguish and Triumph (which may catch the attention of artists and sports photographers!) will have a larger prize level of $250 for 1st prizes and $100 for 2nd place prizes. Juror for the show is Jeffrey Wyant, award-winning photo-grapher, filmmaker and TV producers. The contest is open to all; contestants are not required to live in Darien. All entries will be presented in a slideshow at an April 28th Award and Reveal Reception in the DAC Weatherstone Studio. For more information, click here or call (203) 655-8683.

BRIDGEPORT PUBLIC SCHOOLS

ARTS COUNT DAY 2019

MARCH 21

Bridgeport Public Schools will hold its Third Annual “Arts Count” Day (ACD) on Thursday, March 21, 2019 from 10 to 11 AM to celebrate the arts with Bridgeport students. Arts Count Day encourages artists from the community to share their experiences related to their craft with 5th grade students in the Bridgeport Public School district. Artists will create, perform, and engage for one hour with their assigned 5th grade classroom to call attention to the role the arts play in their everyday lives. It will take 70 artists to cover each 5th-grade classroom on that day. Additional artists will be assigned to other grade levels within the district. POLLOCK-KRASNER FOUNDATION

The mission of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation is to aid, internationally, those individuals who have worked as artists over a significant period of time. The foundation's dual criteria for grants are recognizable artistic merit and financial need, whether professional, personal, or both. The foundation welcomes, throughout the year, applications from visual artists who are painters, sculptors, and artists who work on paper, including printmakers. Applications are encouraged from artists who have genuine financial needs that are not necessarily catastrophic. Grants are intended for a one-year period of time and can be used by the applicant for all legitimate expenditures relating to his or her professional work and personal living (including medical) expenses. The size of the grant is determined by the individual circumstances of the artist. Professional exhibition history will be taken into consideration. Artists must be actively exhibiting their current work in a professional artistic venue such as a gallery or museum. The foundation does not accept applications from commercial artists, video artists, performance artists, filmmakers, crafts-makers, computer artists, or any artist whose work primarily falls into these categories. In addition, it does not make grants to students or for academic study or to pay for past debts, legal fees, the purchase of real estate, moves to other cities, personal travel, or to pay for the costs of installations, commissions, or projects ordered by others. TASSY WALDEN AWARD

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE

FEBRUARY 1

The Tassy Walden Award for New Voices in Children’s Literature, organized by the Shoreline Arts Alliance, was launched in 2001 to be an annual competition that encourages and nurtures the creation of exceptional books for children by unpublished Connecticut writers and illustrators. The competition includes five award categories: Picture Book (text only), Illustrated Picture Book (text and illustrations), Children’s Book Illustrator’s Portfolio, Middle Grade Novel, and Young Adult Novel. An accomplished champion of children’s literature, Katherine ”Tassy” Gessel Walden (1913-2008) was a generous and beloved member of Connecticut’s literary and library community. A graduate of Vassar College, she earned master’s degrees in education and library science, taught in New York City and in Guilford, and served as president of the Connecticut State Library Association. She taught children’s literature at Connecticut College and was active with the Literacy Volunteers of America. Manu-scripts and portfolios submitted for this competition must be prepared in a widely accepted professional manner and must adhere to submission guidelines and the submission deadline. A panel of professional judges reviews qualified submissions in a two-tier judging process. In the first tier, all submissions that meet the submission guidelines are read or reviewed by literary and illustration agents currently working in the industry. In the second tier, all submissions selected by the first-tier judges as finalists are sent for review by editors and art directors at major publishing houses specializing in books for young readers and young adults. At the discretion of the second-tier judges, winners and/or honorable mentions are chosen in each of the five submission categories. A cash award of $250 is presented to each winner.

LIGHTHOUSE WORKS

FISHER ISLAND, NY

RESIDENCY FELLOWSHIPS

FEBRUARY 15

Lighthouse Works, Fisher Island, NY, seeks applications from artists and writers for Sessions 36, 37 and 38 of its Fellowship Program. Fellowships are six-weeks in length and provide room, board, studio space and $1,750 in stipends. Session 36, July 2 - August 13, 2019; Session 37, August 27 - October 8, 2019; and Session 38. October 22 - December 3, 2019. While in residence, fellows’ primary obligation is to the solitary pursuit of their work every fellow is asked to participate in an artist talk on the first weekend of the fellowship and to open their studio for an afternoon at the session’s conclusion. Each fellow has a private bedroom and shares bathrooms, the kitchen and living space at the residence. Lighthouse Works studios are located adjacent to Silver Eel Cove where the ferry arrives and departs the island. The studios are private, flooded with light and face the ocean. Additionally, Lighthouse Works maintains a wood and metal shop, a Paragon kiln, a black and white darkroom and a letterpress print shop. All of which are available to our fellows. Artists at any stage of their career are encouraged to apply for a fellowship through our online application system. Applicants are required to fill out an application form, submit work samples and attach a CV. Artistic excellence is the primary criterion for acceptance into the Fellowship Program.

JAPAN-US FRIENDSHIP COMMISSION

CREATIVE ARTS FELLOWSHIP

2020 OLYMPIC GAMES

MARCH 1

The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, seeks applications for a Creative Arts Fellowship program. The program will support and select up to five collaborative projects of U.S.-Japan artists representative of diverse genres and regions of both countries, to be showcased in Tokyo during the Olympic Games in summer 2020. Award: Each collaborative team will receive a $25,000 fellowship award and up to $2,500 for one round-trip airline ticket between the United States and Japan. The collaborative team will have one year (July 1, 2019-July 1, 2020) to complete their project. The artists must complete a collaborative work incorporating the vision of the Olympic and Paralympic games to present in Tokyo during the Games in 2020. The U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program is extremely competitive; only up to five artists will be selected for travel to Japan. Applicants should anticipate a highly rigorous review of their artistry and should have compelling reasons for wanting to create a captivating piece of art, in collaboration with a Japanese colleague, for the Olympic and Paralympic games. DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS AND EDUCATION

The Fairfield Museum and History Centre seeks an experienced, energetic and creative Director of Programs and Education to lead the development, implementation and administration of all Fairfield Museum public programs, expanding the Museum’s outreach and building productive community partnerships to promote the Museum as a dynamic regional center for arts and humanities education. This is a full-time, senior management position with competitive salary and generous benefit package. Responsible for the development, implementation and administration of all Fairfield Museum public programs. Supervises education staff in the delivery of K-12 student programs & profes-sional development programs for educators. Duties: Public Programs - Develop and implement schedule of creative arts and humanities-based programs for adults, seniors, families and the general public, (lecture series, evening and weekend pro-grams, and summer outdoor performances); lead collaborations with regional cultural partners to create programs, events and activities that welcome new audiences and constituencies. supervise staff in establishing and monitoring performance goals and metrics for public and student programs, including data collection, analysis and reporting. Design and implement strategies for growing program attendance. With curatorial team, plan and implement programming and activities that complement Museum exhibits. Education Programs - Oversee education staff, docents and interns in the development and delivery of K-12 educational programming, as well as professional development programs for teachers that support local, state and national curricular goals; coordinate education staff in developing and implement-ing strategies for providing expanded educational programming for underserved communities and schools; oversee docent recruitment, training, evaluation and supervision to ensure high quality program delivery. Administration: develop and manage departmental budget in accordance with established goals and metrics; supervise departmental staff, establish and monitor annual performance goals; identify and implement opportunities for increasing program-related earned income; prepare program-related grant applications and oversee grant-related record keeping and reporting. Requirements: Applicants should bring creative energy, enthusiasm and good humor to their work, hold a Master’s Degree in education, history or related field—or sufficient skills and experience equivalent to an advanced degree—and have at least 3-5 years of relevant work experience in developing creative public programs. DARIEN ARTS CENTER

OFFICE MANAGER

The Darien Arts Center seeks a full-time Office Manager who reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for implementing day-to-day office administration, including: customer service, managing online registration system, bookkeeping and financial reporting. Confidentiality, excellent organizational skills and accuracy are a must. Good customer relations and the ability to communicate clearly are essential. The ideal candidate for this position is a skilled multi-tasker, is reliable and is committed to consistently meeting deadlines. This is a 40 hour per week position with vacation benefits, no health benefits. Computer Skills Needed: QuickBooks, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Word and Publisher. Financial Reporting: Prepare deposit journals and make bank deposits weekly; manage invoicing/accounts receivable for outreach programs. Administration: Manage Pro-Class, DAC’s online class registration system; input all class descriptions, photos, fees and coupon codes accurately each semester; create class lists and reports to help department directors track enrollment and income; assist clients/students over the phone and in person to register for classes online; provide support to staff, teachers and volunteers, when needed, with the following administrative functions: bulk mailings, correspondence, data entry, archives, event program inserts, filing as well as office coverage; schedule all events in DAC Google Calendars; manage Vendini ticket sales site; supervise volunteers with reconciliation reporting for all ticket and concession sales; assist in the creation of the fall, spring and summer catalogues; administer and or assist with the preparation and distribution of brochures and posters for all events; support the maintenance of DAC facilities and equipment; manage office infrastructure, including computer needs, office furniture, equipment and contracts; supervise cleaning service; order all office supplies.
