Dear Nurses,

It’s no wonder why entrepreneurship is growing in the nursing profession. I spoke with three nurse leaders this week that have been downsized and displaced because, their roles were consolidated into one position. I’ve written a good deal about the increase in merger and acquisition activity, and the continued corporatization of healthcare. Major players such as Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and Walmart are gearing up for major disruptions to the healthcare marketplace. Nurses need to keep themselves marketable, and one of the best ways is to attend our annual educational conference on entrepreneurship. Be empowered by surrounding yourself with savvy nurse business owners with diverse backgrounds, passions and pursuits. Have candid conversations, provocative thinking, innovative business ideas and how-to-solutions. Have your challenges, concerns, and questions addressed in this one-of-a-kind event. Register for this affordable conference here: Nurse Entrepreneurship & Career Alternatives Conference, October 12-14th at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas!

How to make a great impression when applying for an opportunity is covered in this issue’s Nurse Business Insider Tips. Keep in mind, these same tips apply when sending a proposal or pitch to a company or a publicist you want to work with.

I have been a Case Manager specializing in Utilization Review for over 30 years. This specialty has allowed me to stay relevant with nursing and healthcare delivery. Most importantly, the knowledge I have gained has allowed me to fully express myself as an entrepreneur. That is why I am so excited for nurses to learn about case management and patient advocacy from the best. Anne Llewellyn and Deanna Gillingham are providing an amazing workshop that looks at the emerging roles of case management and patient advocacy for nurse entrepreneurs. Develop your business plan for success.

The Right First Impression is Critical When Applying for a Career Opportunity

When you see a career opportunity that looks like a great fit for your skills and goals, it’s important to put your best foot forward when you’re applying for a position – especially when you’re applying by sending an email to the hiring company. The information you submit makes a first impression – and that first impression is critical.

Some best practices to keep in mind:
  • Research the company and position and adapt your resume to ensure your relevant skills and experience are highlighted in your cover email note and your resume.
  • You may know you’re a perfect fit, but if your resume doesn’t include all relevant details, the hiring manager won’t know.
  • You can do Google searches to look for resume examples for formatting and wording guidance.
  • In your email response, be sure to include a cover note that shares your fit for the position and why you feel you’d be a good fit for the company.
  • Focus on why you are a good fit for the role, and how you can benefit the company.
  • Be sure to proof-read your note for spelling or other errors to showcase your attention to detail.
  • You can do Google searches for cover note examples.
  • Just sending an email with no cover note will not make the best impression.
  • Triple-check to be sure you actually attached your resume file.
  • Leaving it out will likely put you out of contention for the position.
  • Most companies will not follow-up to ask you to re-send it.
  • If you use a whimsical or humorous email address for your personal email (such as sorry_not_sorry_sarah@hotmail.com), setup a separate email account with a more professional email name for job application purposes.
  • Put this more professional email address on your resume too.
  • The email address you really does matter in your first impression.
  • Many sites offer free email accounts. Gmail or Hotmail are commonly used.
  • Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date with your experiences, degrees and certifications.
  • Many hiring managers and HR teams will look at your profile even if you didn’t direct them there.
It also never hurts to have a friend, peer, family member or career coach look over your resume and cover note to provide you feedback from their perspective. Another set of eyes may see what you can’t.

When it comes to our health, especially in matters of life and death, the promise of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve outcomes is very intriguing. While there is still much to overcome to achieve AI-dependent health care, most notably data privacy concerns and fears of mismanaged care due to machine error and lack of human oversight, there is sufficient potential that governments, tech companies, and healthcare providers are willing to invest and test out AI-powered tools and solutions. Here are five of the AI advances in healthcare that appear to have the most potential.
Succession planning is an organized method of documenting the assets and processes of your business and determining responsibilities for the business to continue in your absence. This is done to prepare for potential opportunities of selling your business, forming a partnership or joint venture, retirement, or your unexpected absence (short-term/long-term/permanent).

Although each business is individualized to meet the needs of the owner, every business has 5 categories that need to be addressed. These categories are: Administrative, Financial, Information Technology, Legal, and Professional.
When you’re going through tough times, all you need is sympathy. You just need someone to tell you how strong you are and how you can cope with the situation. Essentially, you’re waiting for a soothing voice that can calm your inner storm and genuinely help with your troubles.
If you’re in a situation like this, then know that you’re not alone. You might be feeling low due to a reason like failing at something, breaking up with someone you dearly loved, losing your loved one, not getting a good job, or being betrayed by the person you trusted the most or anything along those lines.
