Some SFW Film Highlights
The Glass Ark
Director: Claudio Espósito

The unedited filmic journey of The Piranesi Experience, produced for Stahlbau Pichler, is off to discover MUSE, the new Science Museum of Trento, Italy designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. We catch sight of how this building was conceived as part of a broader project for redrawing a fragment of the city.
Charlotte Perriand: Les Arcs
Director: Spirit of Space

This film about architect Charlotte Perriand's Les Arcs Resort in the French Alps was created for the installation "Past Forward: Architecture and Design at the Art Institute".

The Dream
Director: Jacob Gossett & Danny Scales

A look inside the creative process as artist and designer Fernando Mastrangelo employs his signature casting technique and material palette to create his first full-scale interior space, "The Dream". Taking inspiration from Henri Rousseau's paintings, Mastrangelo sets out to create a conceptual, yet functional space where our connection to landscape and nature becomes unified with the materials he uses to build spaces. Here, wall becomes mountain, sofa becomes earth, and rug becomes terrain.

Director: Jillian Buckley

His basic philosophy about “the making of a pleasant space” applies to all of architect Peter Bohlin’s work, especially within his most ubiquitous designs for the early Apple stores. Interior Design Magazine’s Cindy Allen interviews Bohlin about the remarkable moments from his 50-year career designing architectural gems for the likes of Girl Scouts, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

The Spring Garden School No. 1 in North Philadelphia had been sitting vacant and abandoned for nearly 30 years before the Philadelphia Housing Authority teamed with the non-profit Help USA to convert the property into affordable housing. Philadelphia is currently experiencing a massive building boom and people are worried about the city losing its neighborhoods and character.

RegenCities: Economic Regeneration in South L.A.
Director:
Bobby Pitts

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) launched its RegenCities Initiative to further define the regenerative city — a concept of sustainable urban development built on a restorative relationship with the environment. The South LA Regeneration video is the first step of a multi-phased approach to developing regeneration strategies for the City of Los Angeles.
Frank Gehry: Creating Feeling
Director:
Emile Rafael

The director Emile Rafael presents a moving architectural journey through Paris's Foundation Louis Vuitton, designed by Frank Gehry. The film features a candid interview with the iconic American architect, whose buildings seem to defy gravity itself.

Mies Van Der Rohe - Architecture as Language
Director:
Alexandre Favre

A short video going through Mies van der Rohe’s thinking expressed by the architect’s own words. A personal project by Alexandre Favre shot with a 10mm Kern Switar and a Bolex.

Blast of Wind
Director:
Claudio Espósito

MMM Corones, the final of the six mountaintop museums built by Reinhold Messner and situated on the summit plateau of Kronplatz, came out of Zaha Hadid Architects' ingenious minds. Glazed façades and steel structures compose a fluid space that offers spectacular views of the Dolomites, where the bravest climbers accomplished their feats. In this film, produced by The Piranesi Experience for Stahlbau Pichler, the building appears candid and majestic, as if waiting to be freed from the rock.

A Simple Life
Director: Jeff Durkin

Architect Jonathan Segal's elegant glass and concrete apartment block goes beyond aesthetics to solve a variety of problems facing cities today. Its 56-unit density fights suburban sprawl, its location along a major corridor gives residents options to bike, walk or Uber, and its solid walls of glass flood the spaces with natural light, giving the residents what they crave a simple life.

A selection from 2018 AIA Film Challenge.

Directors: Paul Clemence & Aksel Stasny

Featuring high profile projects by renowned architects Renzo Piano, Mario Botta and Christ & Gantenbein, this short film takes the viewer on an intimate and immersive ride through four of Switzerland’s most prestigious art museums – Fondation Beyeler, Museum Tinguely, Zentrum Paul Klee and Kunstmuseum Basel. Atmospheric in concept and bearing on abstraction, the film finds moments of space that are at once poetic and imbued with architectural expression, creating a powerful and personal connection to the structures portrayed.
