POLICY NEWS
- 33 proposals for new FET Flagships submitted to the European Commission
On 21 February, the Commission announced that 33 proposals for preparatory actions for new FET Flagships had been submitted. These include the VPHi proposal entitled “I²AGE – Transforming the challenge of ageing into an age of opportunity”.

- A new, modern Multiannual Financial Framework for a European Union that delivers efficiently on its priorities post-2020
At their meeting on 23 February, the European Union's Leaders has discussed about how to ensure that the priorities they have set for the Union can be adequately funded and thus turned into reality. Both elements – defining common priorities and equipping the Union to implement them – are inseparable.
- Call for mission-oriented EU research and innovation
The Commission is currently working on a proposal for the research and innovation framework programme that will follow Horizon 2020
- Europe remains a global research and innovation powerhouse but…
On 20 February, the Commission published the Science, Research and Innovation performance of the European Union 2018 report.
Cyprus has recently signed the European Declaration on High Performance Computing (EuroHPC), becoming the 15th signatory country, while the Austrian Government is examining participation.
- Transformation of health and care in the Digital Single Market
The EC has recently published a report on the consultation “Transformation Health and Care in the Digital Single Market” carried out last year (July-October 2017).

- Study shows that FET research has relevant impacts on knowledge production, economy, people and society
A recent analysis carried out by FET-Traces shows that FET research has substantial impacts on the areas of knowledge production, economy, people and society.

VPH COMMUNITY
Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) and CompBioMed, led by University College London, produced a short film showing the possibilities of using High Performance Computing (HPC) to delve deeper into the processes taking place within the body.
Driven by the VPHi executive director Prof Lies Geris, the VPHi community put forward a FET flagship proposal on "Transforming the challenge of ageing into an age of opportunity"

The call for bids for the organisation of the VPH2020 conference closed on 15 Feb 2018. Two bids were received from the VPHi members Inria and University of Genova. The board will now have the hard task to select the winning bid at the forthcoming BoD meeting on 16 March.
An international consortium coordinated by the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam (AMC) received funding from the H2020 programme to implement INSIST - IN Silico trials for treatment of acute Ischemic STroke
On 15 February 2018, Professor Marco Viceconti, Executive Director of Insigneo and VPHi President, gave a talk on ‘How in silico medicine is transforming healthcare’ at the University of Melbourne’s Graeme Clark Institute for Biomedical Engineering.
On 22 February 2018, the European Commission (EC) published an input paper by Professor Mariana Mazzucato entitled "Mission-Oriented Research and Innovation in the European Union - a problem-solving approach to fuel innovation-led growth"
