REFLECTIONS ON BLESSED EASTER
by Dr. Henderson Ward

No event in the history of mankind increases with time and meaning to such an extent as does Easter. Looking back at the first Easter, its impossibility, its irreducible significance to all mankind, its timing at the nexus of outdated Judaism and fledgling Christianity, and its assertion and imposition of Divine sovereignty, one is aghast and the mind boggles at the sheer enormity of the occasion. This is an event that shook its foundation and changed the world forever.

“He is not here, but is risen” (Luke 24:6) Simple, unambiguous and mighty powerful.

These were the moving words spoken by the angel to the women who had entered the empty tomb and were perplexed that the body of Jesus was not there as expected. This occurred on the first day of the week, Sunday morning, and is the day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is called Easter. Many people are unfamiliar with the history surrounding Easter so I will take a few minutes to bring you up to date by giving you some historical information.

The word Easter is mentioned only once in the King James Version of the Bible (Acts 12:4) and this word in the Greek is “Passover” and so translated elsewhere in the KJV. The English word “Easter” is derived from the Anglo-Saxon name for the Teutonic (Germanic) goddess “Eastre”; the goddess of spring and fertility. Her festival was celebrated on the day of the spring equinox. To her was dedicated a month corresponding to our April.

Many of the traditions used in her worship survive to this day. The Easter Bunny, (a rabbit is a symbol of fertility), the Easter egg, painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring (given as wish for productive and fertile year), and the giving of baskets filled with treats are just a few of the traditions that survive.

Easter is the time, once a year, when we celebrate this most important of festivals. To all Christians Easter is the foundation on which our faith rests. Without the resurrection our faith is groundless and our hope is in vain. Jesus was resurrected on that first Easter morning, and because of that fact, Almighty God the Father endorsed all Jesus stood for and taught:

We know we can be saved by the grace of God.
We can go to heaven and be with Christ when we die.
We know the grave cannot hold us captive when we die.
We know because Christ lives we too shall live forever.
We know that Christ is alive and interceding with the Father for us.
We know all is well for our God is in control.

The resurrection of Jesus from the grave was a verifiable fact by a number of credible witnesses who saw the empty tomb and spoke with the risen Lord. For us today we have the powerful, inspired word of God in the form of the Bible and our faith in Almighty God. We can approach the telling of this marvelous event from a number of different perspectives. I want to look at it from the perspective of the visit to the empty tomb, the contribution of the angel, the appearance in person of Jesus Christ, and the allegations made by the religious authorities.

First let us examine the attitudes of the witnesses

Any event anywhere in the world, if witnessed by a number of people, will be seen and reported differently by each individual. This is as it should be because our hearing is not the same, our eyesight is not the same and our understanding of what we are witnessing is not the same for everyone. We bring to bear our preferences, prejudices, education, cultural norms, politics, philosophy, perceptions and a whole lot more when we observe certain events.

God does not afford humans the identical ability to recall or even to be aware of all the relevant details in any given situation. As a result, we need to hear from all the witnesses to get as full an account as possible. This was exactly the situation at the resurrection of Jesus Christ that first Easter morning. Not all the disciples were witnesses of the empty tomb, and some believers are puzzled why they were not all there to witness this momentous event, but those who were there adopted different approaches.

Some merely observed

Skeptics may question the role and importance of women in the modern church but there is no denying the role they played in the early church. The earliest witnesses of the empty tomb were the faithful women who came with mixed feelings and agendas. The Bible puts it like this, “In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.” (Matthew 28:1)

Remember the purpose of their visit: they all came to see the sepulchre.

The next set of witnesses were the men, in particular Peter and John, who arrived at the empty tomb and merely observed the situation, “Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie…Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw and believed.” (John 20: 6 & 8). Take note that Peter and John were keen observers of the inside of the empty tomb.

Some came to work

These faithful women who came to see the sepulchre also came to perform one last labor of love, one final act of devotion, one ultimate task of service, “…Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.” (Mark 16:1b) It was these same willing workers who were the messengers to the other disciples of the good news of the empty tomb. Yes women! Women in church are still outnumbering and outperforming the men in various ministries, even today!

Someone came and lingered

As happens in nearly all solemn occasions the crowd quickly departs at the conclusion while the curious one, in this case Mary Magdalene, lingers and gets a deeper experience. “Then the disciples went away again unto their own home. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping…” (John 20:10-11a) In her distress Jesus appeared to Mary, the first one to have contact with Jesus after his resurrection, and he gave her words of comfort. It pays at times to ignore the crowd and seek until you find what you are looking for.

Next let us examine the actions of the angel

God is not a God of reaction but plans well ahead and is proactive. Unknown to the disciples, God had already acted decisively to enable them to be compelling witnesses of the empty tomb. The angel sent to carry out the task was busy.

The stone he rolled away

Entry to the tomb for these women was impossible, but God often provides solutions before the faithful can fully conceptualize the magnitude of the problem.

“And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.” (Luke 24:2) Matthew stated it more dramatically, “And behold there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone, and sat on it.” (Matthew 28: 2) Angels are still acting today in the welfare of God’s children, so even if you do not see them they are there. “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.” (Psalm 34:7)

FaithWriters is promoting Trials and Triumphs in several locations on the website. It is in the rotating ads four times more often then regular books. It is also being sent out with our daily Bible devotional by email, and on Twitter to over 15,000 people. We have also posted it on our Facebook page and in the Free Reads for Reviews program on the site and on Facebook. In addition, it is being posted and promoted on 100 Christian blogs. The page for the Testimony book is up: http://faithwriters.com/testimonies.php

We are asking all authors to do the following:

1) Promote the book on blogs and websites. Make sure to add this link: http://faithwriters.com/testimonies.php. If every author promotes/posts his or her article at least three times, we will have 120 posts pointing to the book. The more, the better!

Rick King sent me this message about his visit to the dentist with a copy of Trials and Triumphs in hand:

I was sitting in the chair getting numb and the assistant said that I could read my book (Trials and Triumphs) while waiting. I told her that this was for the dentist. I gave her the book and said that it is for her also. She took it jumping up and down with excitement and read my testimony first. She then said I want to show our manager. The manager came to see me then and said that a friend of hers was talking about the book and wanted to read it. Then another assistant got involved. I was just amazed as to how the Lord drew all to this book. I then gave it to the dentist and he was so grateful thanking me. He said this means more to him than I can know.

I don't know what the Lord is going to do at the dentist office with this, but to see this open door I am sure many things will take place. What a blessing from the Lord.  Blessings, Rick

2) Read the book and post a review on Amazon. We already have over 15 reviews on Amazon.

3) Pray that God uses the book for His glory, and that many come to a saving knowledge of Christ.

Several Members Hired for Jobs Posted on Private Messenger

We have recently had several members who have found various types of writing assignments through the FaithWriters Private Messenger. In a couple of cases we just happened to stumble on this knowledge. Please remember to let us know when you secure writing opportunities we post on private messenger.

We also continue to see an increased use of member articles by other websites, churches, newsletters, online magazines, etc.

More Constructive Reviews on Challenge Entries

In an effort to help other members with their writing, several longtime active members have initiated a program to make sure Challenge submissions receive more constructive reviews. When you submit your Challenge entries you will now be able to check a box asking for more constructive critiques. FaithWriters is the place to put yourself out there and honestly gauge where others see your writing. This is the safest place for you on the internet and every writer on the site had to start from the beginning. Even bestselling Christian author Philip Yancey still appreciates an honest critique. He says:

"I have a few, very few, trusted friends who will edit me with a scowl. Most people want you to feel good so they give you compliments about your writing, and these don’t help at all (except emotionally). Really, you need some grouches to edit your work." Philip Yancey in a FaithWriters interview.

Critique Circle Improvements

Here are a couple of comments from Richard McCaw who is very involved in the critique circle:

"I enjoy helping fellow authors and it also improves my critical senses."  Giving critiques helps the one critiquing too!

"I am being greatly helped by these critiques. Many thanks for everything."

We now have several editors cruising the Critique Circle, looking to help members become the writer God has called them to be. If you have not yet submitted an article to the Circle, you should do so today. We have also added a Challenge genre so you can submit any Challenge articles that have already been judged. Again, this is the safest place to put yourself out there and see what others think of your writing. Don't wait to receive feedback when you actually publish an article. Get it now and build a sound foundation as a writer.

The Circle usually requires every participant to offer a critique to get a critique (two, three, or more critiques per piece they submit). What a deal! Write one critique and get at least two (most likely more) on your piece. However, any upgraded member who is reading this message can get one free critique credit to try it out. Just email Michael@faithwriters.com and ask "How can I get my free critique credit?" You will receive an email with the answer.
Become the Writer You are Called to Be
Make a Commitment to the Challenge

Many of us believe strongly that God has called us to write. The problem is that most of us struggle when it comes to writing for public consumption. We may have a great message for a book, but we lack confidence and/or knowledge in how to create a piece of material that will captivate the reader and get our message across. So we either never end up achieving our calling, or we release a less than excellent finished product.

Some of us could be compared to the guy who wanted to climb to the peak of the mountain, but failed to prepare. He just drove to the mountain and started climbing, with no training, supplies or proper equipment. Do you think that man would make it to the top? If so, how long do you think it would take? And how many obstacles and pitfalls would he encounter along the way?

The truth is, being a successful writer requires commitment and preparation. FaithWriters cannot directly get you to the top of your mountain, but the tools we provide can help prepare you for the climb. One of the best tools we offer is the Weekly Writing Challenge. We urge you to make it a point to enter the Challenge on a regular basis in 2014. We guarantee that if you make the commitment, your writing will improve and you will make great strides toward being the writer you are called to be.

"I checked out several Christian sites, some were good and some were surprisingly poor, but FaithWriters was one that stood out, primarily because they were Christian writers who also were writing Christian material. I rarely ever pay to use a website, but I felt this one was well worth the small monthly investment, so I joined. So many things have blessed me there! The weekly challenge was a huge boost to me. The forums, articles, lessons, contests... this site has encouraged me in so many ways. There is no way I could be where I am on my journey today without FaithWriters. Kevin Ingram"

Today's Great Multitude Daily Bible Devotional

Be the Mountain by Toni Babcock

"They that trust in the LORD shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever," (Psalm 125:1 KJV).

When I was a child we played a game called "King of the Mountain." All that was needed to play was a group of ego-driven kids and a small hill or mound of dirt to climb up on. Whoever climbed to the top of the hill and managed to beat off his or her opponents became the "King" until thrown down to rejoin the rest of the rabble at the bottom. If you've ever played King of the Mountain, wasn't it delightful to yank that cocky king off the hill and watch him stumble to the bottom?

Sometimes I think we Christians engage in a similar game of "King of the Mountain". We play it when we feel other people's positions or ideas pose a personal threat, and we take personal satisfaction in knocking them down. Not so with Jesus. When Jesus washed the disciples feet before going to the cross, He left them an example of submission and being a servant. He was teaching his disciples not to lord it over one another, and not to strive to always come out on top. I think what he was really saying was "be the mountain."

"Be the mountain" Christians don't point to themselves, they point to God. They don't need to elevate their status, they already know who they are. Instead, they lift others up to a higher place. They are not afraid of opposition. They are confident in Christ, and cannot be moved. Basically, to "be the mountain" Christian is to trust in the LORD, and to make a way for people to rise up and follow Jesus.

Fishers of Men

FaithWriters is unique in its dual purpose: We are writers and evangelists. On FaithWriters, you'll find fiction, non-fiction, poems, devotionals, Bible studies and other articles written from a Christian perspective; content you will not find on a site that is strictly evangelistic in nature, or on a general writing site. With so much variety, we receive many visitors who might not go to a traditional evangelism site. Many may not even be looking for Jesus, but Jesus still meets them when they visit. In our experience, God tends to find people where they are in their life. This may be while they are reading your article about marriage or divorce. It might happen when they read about struggles with sin or your fictional story. What we are saying is to keep on submitting your various pieces that could only be authored by you. You never know who will be touched and moved by your work.

Men and women from over 227 countries are drawn to the FaithWriters site by the various articles on the end of our virtual fishing pole. Many have no other way than the internet to find out about Jesus. They are able to learn a lot from our site and the sister-sites to which we have provided links. Many click on the sites we link to that offer in-depth information on Jesus because they are able to get more information in their native language.

To date, at least 435 people have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior directly through FaithWriters. Plus, as mentioned, we refer many people to other sites to help answer their questions and accommodate their language. We know it is not about just about numbers. We also know that accepting Jesus and confessing Him is just where it starts. It is honor to consider the fact that God would use us in this way.

We contact every person who leaves an email address, and provide them with more information. Sometimes we correspond with them several times. We even offer to place them in contact with another believer (FaithWriters member) in their country.
Consider how much time people --- especially kids --- spend on the internet these days. Watch this two minute video on how Kimberly found God on the internet.
