Dear Nurses,

There are many nurses that end up starting a business because one day they realize they could make a living doing what they are currently a doing, as an independent consultantA consultant is defined as an expert in one or more identified areas who partners with a client to improve the client’s condition. A consulting business is the most popular category of nurse owned businesses. Nurses partner with clients in a variety of ways: as an independent expert, collaborator, counselor, instructor, analyst, or interventionist.

What traits do nurses have that consult?
  • They have content knowledge or process knowledge that can be transferred to the client
  • The focus on contributing and offering value to their clients
  • They continually expand their expertise through developing additional intellectual property and experiences
  • They charge based on value
Building a lucrative consulting practice is a reality for many NNBA members. Do you know what a thought leader is? Chances are, you follow several thought leaders in your industry or in other spaces you’re interested in. But have you ever considered becoming a thought leader yourself?

There are a lot of benefits to being a thought leader. You can set your own schedule, and people will value your time. However, this career path isn’t for everyone — there are drawbacks to being a thought leader, too.

This blog post breaks down helpful information on thought leaders, including how to become one if you think this is the right move for you. Read on to learn everything you need to know about thought leadership.
Do you ever think (or say) that you “just don’t have enough time in the day” to accomplish what you need to? Well, you DO have enough time. You’re just not managing it all that well. Barring emergencies and crises, that’s because:

• Your priorities are wrong, spending more time on unimportant matters than important ones because they’re “easier.”

• You’re doing failure work, or worse, other people’s failure work, meaning redoing things not done correctly the first time.

• You’re working hard and not smart, not delegating or subcontracting, or you’re allowing distractions.
We were onto something in 2015 when we started providing an NNBA Shark Tank Competition. Within a couple years, more nursing organizations and academic settings were incorporating Pitch fest type events. This is good for nurse entrepreneurship! We want to share that the ANA and HIMSS is partnering on NursePitch™, a virtual video event where nurses showcase their creative solutions and innovations around: a medical device or technology; an organizational or process improvement; a care delivery model; a business, program, service; research; or an educational intervention. First prize is $10,000. Be sure to let us know if you apply.
