Presidents Corner                     November 15, 2015

I am looking forward to speaking this week with Nurse Leaders in Gerontology in Orlando. I get to share why nurses need business savvy and what many NNBA members are doing with their businesses devoted to the needs of the geriatric population. Be sure to check out the article of interest below on How Boomers Are Coming Up With Creative Living Arrangements.

NNBA member Lorie Brown has a special Thanksgiving offer for nurses. Get a FREE Copy of Lorie’s book, “Law and Order For Nurses: The Easy Way To Protect Your License & Livelihood”. This book sells for $24.99 on Amazon but Lorie is giving it free from 11/25 until 11/30. Grab your copy here: http://yournurseattorney.com/freebook. Thank you Lorie!

In the new year, I will be facilitating a Business Success Principles Virtual Course on the steps to advancing your career to its next level. I will cover in-depth the strategies and skills that will allow you to achieve your entrepreneurial goals. This will be divided into 4 sessions and will address specific items that I am asked about routinely. I will be providing the dates and times in the near future.

Be on the lookout for #NNBA2016 speaker submission guidelines for our annual nurse entrepreneurship conference, coming soon on NNBA’s website. Once the guidelines are published I will be asking all of you to spread it around to your channels of communication. Many nurses have already contacted me wanting to participate in this October’s event so I am confident that we will have an excellent program.

November holds National Caregivers Month, Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. There are over 65 million people providing care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member during any given year. There are 21.8 million Veterans and just over 3 million nurses in the United States. I am thankful for all who serve and have served, for caregivers and for nurses who care for so many. I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Looking forward,

Michelle

How Boomers Are Coming Up With Creative Living Arrangements

The Globe
Marianne Kilkenny’s salad dressing recipe called for honey. She was all out, so she picked up her phone and texted. “Here are three women with honey at my door,” recalls Kilkenny, whose salad was dressed in less than five minutes. “Having proximity, having people close? You cannot buy that.”

Divorced with no children, Kilkenny shared her home in Asheville, N.C., with a parade of middle-aged housemates for four years. She kept a mother-in-law suite with its own kitchen, while her Golden Girls shared the rest of the house. Many were single women between 54 and 72, like herself, although a married couple and a single guy passed through, too.
5 Rules for Stand-Out Marketing Campaigns

Entrepreneur Magazine
Seven years ago, in the midst of an economic recession, Boston’s Yale Appliance + Lighting was losing money. “I’d read somewhere that people will buy some things anyway during a recession -- and one of those things was refrigerators,” recalls CEO Steve Sheinkopf. “So we pumped more money into radio and newspaper advertising, thinking it would help. It didn’t -- it hurt.”

Sheinkopf, who had taken over the store founded by his grandfather, refocused with what was (at the time) a radical approach. He doubled down on a digital marketing strategy that included social media, blogging, reputation management and email components.
Ways to Detox After a Rough Work Week

Success Magazine
It’s been a week. The early mornings and late nights at the office have meshed into one big blur. Your body aches. So does your mind. So when you leave work in a haze Friday, what can you do to detox before you come back Monday? We asked the Young Entrepreneur Council, “How do you de-stress after a hectic week at work?” to find out.

1. Spend time with family and friends. Let's not forget about what's important in life. If you work around the clock, you'll burn out. At the end of the day, success is balance, happiness and relationships that matter. Besides, the best ideas often come from a rested, happy mind. —Allie Siarto, Allie Siarto & Co. Photography
