US Embassy Madrid warns of demonstrations & possible violence flwg Catalonia parliament's vote just hours ago to formally break from Spain. See email for more.

Supplemental Info:

On 10/6/2017, AlertsUSA warned subscribers of the need for caution visiting Spain following publication of the results of a Catalonian independence referendum held several days earlier. In this referendum, an overwhelming majority of voters chose to separate from Spain and to declare themselves an independent nation.

A short time ago, Catalonia's parliament moved forward with formalization of the break by voting for and passing an independence declaration.

Spain's government has been quick to react, with the Senate voting to approve Article 155 of Spain's 1978 Constitution suspending home rule in Catalonia and giving Prime Minister Rajoy the power to oust the Catalan government, and if necessary, by force.

The U.S. State Department has expressed it's support for the Spanish government's constitutional efforts to keep Spain united.

Within the last hour the U.S. State Department and U.S. Embassy Madrid have issued a new security message for American citizens warning of demonstrations and possible violence related to the evolving political situation.

AlertsUSA again cautions subscribers that if you, a family member or colleague are planning to visit Spain in the near future, it would be wise to thoroughly consider safety and security measures prior to travel. If asked about your opinion on the self-determination movement, the wisest response is that you are a guest in the country and that it would be highly inappropriate to comment. In short, stay out of the debate.
