Nursing and Entrepreneurship: Perfect Together

Donna Cardillo The Inspiration Nurse®
Marketing is essential to any company’s bottom line. However, traditional advertising channels such as newspapers, radio and television can get expensive really quick. Furthermore, they may produce little or no ROI. Contrary to these earlier practices, your own marketing strategy does not need to break the bank.
After nearly 25 years of marriage, Rob and Sandy Chester decided it was time to open a franchise that used both of their expertise. Sandy has 28 years of experience as a registered nurse, while Rob has nearly 30 years of corporate experience in the insurance industry. Together, they wanted to help the elderly in their community as Right at Home franchisees. Here's what they have learned.
Business ownership is part of the American dream. And why not? It provides the opportunity to be your own boss, make your own hours, and have creative freedom, flexibility of time, and unlimited earning potential. And while the concept of “business” is foreign to many nurses, we actually make great entrepreneurs.

Karen Mercereau, RN, iRNPA
Founder of Independent RN, Patient Advocate

Karen Mercereau is a nationally recognized visionary leader in healthcare, known for her ability to transcend challenges, and create opportunity from complexity. She brings 46 years of clinical nursing, community and home based healthcare delivery and patient advocacy to the development of the RN Patient Advocates Group Practice in Tucson, AZ. In 2002 she partnered with the University of Arizona College of Nursing creating a Learning Intensive that is nationally known as the leading educational program preparing RNs for this new practice model.

In Karen’s words:
My professional intention: I am an independent RN Patient Advocate because I believe that the best healthcare should be patient-centered and inclusive of all science-based healing approaches available. People deserve to be a vital part of their own health care team. My work as an iRNPA allows me to:
  • be a positive force for change in a healthcare system that has become fragmented
  • reduce my clients’ risk of medical errors
  • ensure the integrity of the diagnostic process
  • research and teach the full range of therapeutic options so people can make fully informed decisions about their care
  • be a teacher and guide for patients and their families facing medical issues beyond their level of understanding
  • facilitate communication in our medical system whose communication patterns are too often strained or interrupted by outdated approaches
