President's Corner                                              February 1, 2017
In 1985, a critical care nurse from California started a newsletter known as the Nurse Entrepreneur’s Exchange to provide information for business minded nurses and a forum for them to connect and share information. This newsletter was so popular with nurses that it quickly evolved into the National Nurses in Business Association. True to the initial design to provide a networking arena for nurse entrepreneurs and to update nurses on business opportunities, the NNBA included national educational conferences, workshops and seminars. We decided that our NNBA Newsletter should return to its original name. You will begin seeing Nurse Entrepreneurs Exchange in your in-box on the 1st and 15th of every month. Now more than ever, Nurses are interested in getting more information the entrepreneurial options available in healthcare. Our continued growth in membership and subscribers validates our continuing content value to nurse entrepreneurs and aspiring nurse entrepreneurs!
Announcements & Upcoming Events
NNBA Shark Tank Registration Open!
The past few years have been so much fun and highly educational as we listened to the nurses present in our Shark Tank Competition. We will be limiting entries to 5 contestants so if you are interested, you can enter here.  I have already spoken with 2 innovative nurses that are interested in claiming the prizes and awards to be given for #NNBA2017.

Free Webpage for NNBA Members Only
NNBA members can have their own web page to promote themselves and their business. For nurses that don’t have a website, a web presence is a must in today’s digital age. People have to be able to find you, learn about your business and the products and services you have to offer. For nurses that have a website, you will benefit from backlinks to your site, which definitely helps your SEO. This benefit alone is worth more than double the cost of your membership. Just fill out the Web Presence Application form and within 3-5 business days, your webpage will be up!

Research Study on Nurse Entrepreneurship
You are being asked to participate in a research study that is being conducted by Sharon Weinstein, MS, RN, CRNI-R, FAAN, CSP (past speaker at #NNBA2015 and #NNBA2016) in collaboration with Marla Vannucci, PhD of Adler University. This research is intended to learn about nurse entrepreneurship, to understand the experiences of nurse entrepreneurs, the skills upon which they have relied for success, challenges they face, and their experiences of self-care and work-life balance. Questions about the study or the survey can be directed to Sharon Weinstein at sharon@smwgroupllc.com or Marla Vannucci at mvannucci@adler.edu. Click here:

Nurse Business Insider Tip      by Renee Thompson
Where Nurses in Business will share an insider tip that may benefit other nurses in different stages of business development.
Growing Your List: One of the most important strategies to promoting your business is to grow your mailing list early. You can have the best product or service but if nobody knows about it, it’s invisible! A simple way to do this is to:
  • Create something of value for your subscribers based on your business (an eBook, tip sheet, or short article)
  • Add an opt-in box on your website
  • Link the opt-in box to an email service (mail chimp, constant contact, etc.)
  • Start collecting email addresses!
Once you have a list of subscribers, make sure you continue to send them meaningful content such as a newsletter (like Michelle does in her bimonthly for NNBA subscribers), industry news, or other content worthy of someone’s time. You can then pepper these emails with promotional content to share what you do.

Don’t wait until your business is success before you start growing your list!

Transforming your team’s approach to sales requires a shift from just pushing products to creating genuine connections with people. And those genuine connections don't include fraud and mistrust.

Along those lines, consider how 2016 had its share of the shady sales practices that dog the business world. From the Wells Fargo case of opening fraudulent accounts, to the allegations surrounding Trump University throughout the recent election, multiple examples of unfair sales tactics made front-page headlines on a regular basis last year. And 2017 probably won't be much different.
The stories of major successes are full of radical actions that put people in a position ahead of the pack.

• While in college, Bill Gates acquired his first deal that founded Microsoft by calling the president of MIT-Systems and securing a meeting for a demonstration of new software for their platform. In truth, he hadn’t even written a single line of code.

• David Bowie hired a large number of bodyguards to follow him just to make him appear famous while in the U.S.
If you're even a semi-regular reader of mine, by now you know I love the reality series The Selection: Special Operations Experiment, which airs Thursday nights at 10 p.m. EST on History. (Or you can catch up on the show's site.) Thirty people with no military background undertake extreme physical and mental challenges; their instructors are combat veterans from various U.S. Special Operations units including Navy SEALs, Special Forces Green Berets, and Army Rangers.

In past weeks I've had the honor of talking with a number of the instructors:
