Subject: VPH Newsletter: Summer 2013

_________VPH News__________
Monthly newsletter of the Virtual Physiological Human for Integrative Biomedical Research & the Digital Patient News
Dear VPH Friends,
this summer has been very intense for the Institute. In July, in connection to IUPS 2013, we held the annual General Assembly, during which few important decisions were taken. Among the others, a new membership model was approved, which gives new opportunities to anyone interested to join in, such as personal and student fee and VPH conference discounts.
The GA saw the election and the official presentation of the new members of the governing bodies of the Institute: the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors, of which you can find all the details below.
IUPS 2013 also offered the perfect scenario to important scientific discussions on the development of a multi-scale system biology, which took place with representatives of all domains involved. In particular for the first time in Chicheley Hall, scientists working on all aspects of systems biology came together to develop a common roadmap on this topic. A small group is now working on the official statement to summarize the outcome of the discussions. We will surely keep you posted on the future developments!
With this newsletter, we are also happy to announce the opening of the call for bid for VPH 2016: the International Conference on the Virtual Physiological Human is a conference series held biennially on even years, whose objective is to provide a forum for the discussion and the dissemination of the broad field of in silico medicine. Institutions that are interested to host the event shall apply to the call by Jan 15th, 2014.
We wish you all a fresh start after the summer!
Best regards,
VPH team

New membership model
At the July General Assembly in Birmingham a new membership model was presented and approved. Check out the news! We now offer also personal and student membership fee.
The Institute announces the new composition of its governing bodies: the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees.
Board of Directors (BoD)
The BoD main duty is to drive the Institute policy, setting the agendas, proposing specific actions and approving the annual business plan. The BoD is composed by the representative of the supporting members, which are defined via a public call on annual bases.
Board of Trustees (BoT)
The BoT supervises the operations of the BoD, ensuring they do not get into conflict with the interests of the membership and do not violate the legal provisions. The BoT is composed by the President and two Financial Auditors, which were recently elected by electronic ballot.
Artreat: A Multiscale Model For Prediction Of
Atherosclerosis Progression
On Aug 31st, 2013 ARTreat successfully ended after 60 months of intense activities. ARTreat is an integrated project coordinated by the National Council of Research (CNR) of Italy, managing 20 EU partners selected to provide a multidisciplinary approach (IT, biological, medical, bioengineering). An interview with the Coordinator, Prof Parodi, will talk us through the project, its goals and achievements. Read more
VPH at IUPS Congress & ICSU Satellite meeting
During the summer, the VPH community has been actively involved in open discussions with representatives of other scientific domains towards the common goal of developing a multi-scale systems biology. The IUPS Congress and, in particular, the satellite meeting organized by ICSU offered a perfect scenario for these debates.
Prof Noble delivers the IUPS President's lecture: "Physiology moves back onto centre stage: a new synthesis with evolutionary biology".
