The Holy Saturdays of Life - by Karen Pourbabaee

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in His great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3 NAS

“It’s Saturday. We’ve scattered, hiding in fear, grieving on our own. Feeling bewildered, perhaps abandoned. But I abandoned Him, denied Him, felt encroaching waves of shame. Why couldn’t I stand there bravely with John and hold His mother?

It was exhilarating walking with Jesus, so easy to have hope. We witnessed His miracles and broke bread together until that very last time. It was somber; we didn’t want to believe He really had to go.

But here we are, lost, the day after His crucifixion. Waiting for good news, for hope to bring us back to life. To belief. To faith. O God, I pray this darkness will not last forever…”

The preceding could’ve been from Peter’s journal. Holy Saturday was hard for Jesus’ followers, suddenly finding themselves off course without a guide. In dark and uncertain times.

We must all walk through the holy Saturdays of life. Periods of darkness where we cannot see ahead. Or feel His presence. Perhaps with no strength to pray.

Bravely walk through that darkness. We’re not abandoned. God waits patiently for His work to be accomplished before dawn. In darkness, we seek His face, strain toward His whispers, learn to trust Him more. Our navigational skills improve.

Jesus has returned from the grave! And He knows our way. With the Lord, we shall walk toward Sunday, a day of new life and living hope!
