AUGUST SPOTLIGHT NOW AVAILABLE AS PODCAST
A recording of our latest live interview show on WPKN 89.5FM, Spotlight on Arts & Culture, is now available as a podcast on Soundcloud at http://bit.ly/SpotlightFunding. Our August 2019 program was devoted to a conversation with two local arts and culture funders. In "Who Funds Arts & Culture? A Window into Local Philanthropy,” we spoke with Lauren Patterson, Executive Director of the New Canaan Community Foundation, and Kelly O’Donnell, with the law firm of Pullman & Comley, about how both organizations fund arts and culture in their communities across Connecticut. What issues factor into their decisions about what to fund and what processes do they use to come to decisions? Hear their fascinating ideas about what makes a community, and how both funders encourage collaboration not only by their applicants, but also by themselves, as they both collaborate with other funders to produce exponential results.
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
RICH PATTON IV

Richard Thomas Patton IV is an abstract painter based in Bridgeport, with his studio at 305 Knowlton Street studios. As a child, Rich showed an early interest and talent in drawing, that later grew into a career and life as an artist. He majored in Art in Graphic Design at Western Connecticut State University'School of Visual and Performing Arts in Danbury, but quickly found that he most wanted to spend his time developing his painting skills. He says his work is spiritual "to the point that the act of painting becomes like a form of prayer or meditation,” and that it "expresses emotions, feelings, ideas and beliefs--created through the use of vibrant colors, bold compositions, textures, and patterns." Richard has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions throughout Connecticut, including at Bridgeport's historic McLevy Hall, where he was awarded a grant for his work “Ethiope” depicting Little Liberia and Bridgeport’s rich history, and in 2018, he won a commission from the Mary & Eliza Freeman Center for History & Community to create works for its "Reimagining Little Liberia : Restoration and Reunion" exhibit at The Housatonic Museum of Art, Bridgeport.  In 2016 he received commissions for multiple paintings from both The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center, Fairfield, and the Yale New Haven Health's Park Avenue Medical Center, Trumbull.  With his roots in abstract expressionism and action painting, Richard has been influenced and inspired by artists such as Romare Bearden, Jackson Pollock, Williem De Kooning, Salvador Dali, and Picasso. His African and Latin heritage can be seen throughout his work. He paints in the styles of abstract expressionism and action painting, conveying complexity and depth through the use of vibrant colors, bold compositions, textures, and patterns. Themes of life and nature are prominent in his work. As Rich puts it, "Painting takes me back to my beginnings as a child, where my
mind and imagination are completely free and my creativity can run wild. It allows me to express my true emotions and feelings from my subconscious and give my perspective on the world and how I see it. It is a beautiful thing." See Rich's website, and Instagram page
KELLY ROSSETTI

Kelly Rossetti is an abstract and figurative painter, based in Westport, working primarily in acrylic and oil and using a variety of media, including gouache, oil pigment sticks, charcoal and graphite.
Before dedicating herself full-time to a painting career, Kelly had an extensive career in the fashion industry as a merchandiser/sales executive. Her 14 years in the industry shaped her artistic vision and creative eye. Studying under an extraordinary painter at a small atelier in New York, her focus started with still life and traditional subject matter, but then her natural ability for figurative work began to show itself. At the same time her exposure and training in the fashion world to continuously evaluate color combinations and coordinate entire collections directed her color choices, helping her fine-tune her sense of color. She says: "I work abstractly from my feelings and from experiences that have affected me. I have long been enamored with the human form and consistently work towards capturing a certain feeling or emotion that comes from the figure. Whether it be loose and expressive figurative drawings or expressive paintings, I strive to find the beauty of the form. For my non-representational abstract & landscape work, I like to start with an unpremeditated blank canvas and let the work begin to emerge organically. I continue to build on what appears giving form to the chaos and building the piece into a painting that will hopefully, transmit a feeling to the viewer. I paint to reach the place within me that is free of controls and boundaries and thrive on the challenges of exploring new themes and ideas.” Kelly is represented by several galleries across the country, including Gallery Vibe, Naples, FL, and Destination Haus, Amagansett, NY. Kelly most recently received an award of excellence for painting at the Juried 2019 Westport Fine Arts FestivalShe is a member of SPAG (the St. Philip's Artists Guild) and has an exhibition coming up Sept. 23 at Gallery@Pearl. See her website and Instagram page.

INDIVIDUAL NEWS
Nancy Breakstone had her photograph His Life (digital 16x12; click for complete image) juried into the Loft Artists Association exhibit The Shape of Memories,  opening with a reception Sat. Aug. 24, 5-7pm. The juror for this show is Arianne Faber Kolb.  The image was taken in Cuba which Nancy writes, "holds memories for all older Ameri-can visitors who, like me, see the cars of their youth driving by. But Havana's bright Caribbean colors did not erase my memory of the people living there, some in hopelessness and others with remarkable strength in stark contrast to their surroundings.  Nancy will also be showing her photographs at Audrey Road as part of the Ridgefield Art Walkorganized by the Ridgefield Guild of Artists, kicking off with a town-wide party Fri. Aug. 23, 5-8pm.
Ann Chernow's lithograph Rendezvous in Black (2012, lithograph on Carson paper, 11x14) is prominently featured on the header of this months's News of the Print World. Congratulations Ann!
Karen Kalkstein and Julie Leff have a two-person show, Natural Expressions at the Fairfield Public Library's Bruce S. Kershner Gallery. The exhibit runs Aug. 23 to Oct. 13, with a reception and artist talks on Fri. Sept. 6, 6-8pmKaren's work in the show is from a Woodland Series referencing trees and forests: collages of natural materials like birch bark, feathers, wasp nest “paper,” small stones, and lichen, with bits of newspaper and paint. At right, a detail of Shadow Branch (2019, 24x18; click for complete image)
Julie Leff is showing a variety of pieces, all of which display her love of color, in the two-person exhibition Natural Expressions that she is sharing with Karen Kalkstein at the Fairfield Public Library's Bruce S. Kershner Gallery. The exhibit  runs Aug. 23 to Oct. 13, with a reception and artist talks on Fri. Sept. 6, 6-8pm. At right, Julie's Cornucopia (20x30, oil on canvas, detail; click for complete image). Cornucopia is the first in Julie's new "deconstructed still life" series. Julie comments that she paints florals, still lifes, abstracts and portraits. "First, I am attracted to a subject and I try to understand why. Usually color plays the largest part. Then, I decide on a size and shape for the finished work. Finally, I put paint on the canvas in such a way as to try to capture the essence that first attracted me."
Jim Malloy has three acrylic paintings in the Kent Art Association’s 2nd Members Show of 2019 at the Kent Gallery in Kent, CT.  Each was painted with acrylic on paper using found objects, such as a credit card, CD jewel case and a piece of flat subway tile.  Fire In Ice (at right), Dancers of Desire and Seven Sisters will be on display from Aug. 17 through Sept. 8. .
Amy Oestreicher received some great reviews in Stage Buddy, TheaterLife and BroadwayWorld First Look, for her performance of her autobiographical play Passageways at New York's HERE. Amy has work in next week's Ridgefield Art Walk (kicking off Fri. Aug 23, 5-8pm: she will be exhibiting in The Toy Chest - and will be giving a painting demonstration outside the store Sat 24 and Sun 25. At right her
Barbara Ringer's piece The Lottery (2017,    15x15x2, photo-based mixed media, metal print, decoupage; click for larger image), inspired by the Shirley Jackson classic short story, has been juried into the Loft Artists Association exhibit The Shape of Memories,  opening with a reception Sat. Aug. 24, 5-7pm. The juror for this show is Arianne Faber Kolb.
Katie Settel has an important exhibition opening later in the Fall at the Armstrong Gallery at 305 Knowlton Street. (Un)Forgotten is a photography-based exhibit that tells the emotional story of shuttered mental institution and a "lost" and "forgotten" sibling. The show illustrates Katie's remarkable journey into the Mansfield Training School, a shuttered mental institution on UConn's Storrs Campus. It was here that Katie's “lost” brother, Andy, spent most of his life until the facility was shut down in 1993 due to neglect and over-crowding. The exhibition opens Oct. 4, 2019, with a reception 6-9pm, and runs through Oct. 18. More...

OPPORTUNITIES
URBAN GLASS
BROOKLYN
 SCHOLARSHIPS
AUGUST 18

Established in New York City in 1977, as New York Experimental Glass Workshop,  UrbanGlass fosters experimentation and advances the use and critical understanding of glass as a creative medium. By the early 1980s, the Workshop was home to some of the most exciting new voices in the emerging glass movement, including Dale Chihuly and Toots Zynsky. Many fine artists working in other mediums, like Kiki Smith and Lynda Benglis, sought out the Workshop to incorporate glass into their work. In 1991, the Workshop moved to a 12,000-square-foot studio, small store, and gallery space in Brooklyn and changed its name to UrbanGlass. See classes and workshops availableUrbanGlass offers 4 deadlines a year for general scholarship applications. These four deadlines are at the start of each semester, when there is most funding available for financial aid and students have the best chance of admission into their preferred workshop. General Scholarships as well as Partner Scholarships (through arrangements made with 160+ colleges and universities) are available. For more information, and to apply for a scholarship, click here.
LOWER EAST SIDE PRINTSHOP, NYC
KEYHOLDER RESIDENCIES
SEPTEMBER 1

The Lower East Side Printshop was  founded in 1968, by artist and educator Eleanor Magid as an open access art and community center. It soon became part of the alternative spaces movement of the 1970s, and it continues to be a major resource for artists, with its groundbreaking 24-hour studio use, open access policy, and other services. In spring 2005, the Printshop moved from the East Village to a five times larger facility in Midtown Manhattan. The Keyholder Residency Program offers emerging artists free 24-hour access to printmaking facilities to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Residencies are free and one year long, starting October 1st take place in the shared Artists’ Studio, including the solvent/etching area and the darkroom. Keyholders work independently, in a productive atmosphere alongside other contemporary artists. Artists from all disciplines are eligible to apply. Artist must live in New York City for the year of the residency. Participation is competitive. Applications are evaluated by a rotating committee of artists, critics, curators, and art professionals based on the quality of submitted artwork. A total of 8 artists are awarded the residency annually. See Guidelines hereApply here.
GOTTLIEB EMERGENCY FELLOWSHIP
ROLLING DEADLINE

The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Emergency Grant program is intended to provide interim financial assistance to qualified painters, printmakers, and sculptors whose needs are the result of an unforeseen, catastrophic incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Each grant is given as one-time assistance for a specific emergency, examples of which are fire, flood, or emergency medical need.
This program has no deadlines. The program does not consider requests for dental work, chronic situations, capital improvements, or projects of any kind; nor can it consider situations resulting from general indebtedness or lack of employment. The maximum amount of this grant is $15,000; an award of $5,000 is typical. Applicants should be aware that this is a grant program, and that each application is considered on its merits within the criteria of the program. While the program attempts to provide assistance to as many applicants as it can, the filing of an application is not, nor should it be perceived as, a guarantee of funding.
Eligibility: To be eligible for this program, an artist must be able to demonstrate a minimum involvement of ten years in a mature phase of his or her work. Artists must work in the disciplines of painting, sculpture or printmaking. Each application will be reviewed by the Directors, who will exercise their discretion in considering it, and will determine the amount of each award. Applicants should note there is a set amount appropriated for these grants each fiscal year; once this budgetary limit has been reached, the Foundation will not be able to judge any additional requests on their merits. For further information click here.

Applicants may include artists working in multiple disciplines, collaboratives, and arts workers such as, but not limited to, curators, publishers and community organizers. Fellows are provided with: a one-year, merit-based, unrestricted $20,000 award; fully subsidized housing for one-year in Tulsa's Arts and/or Greenwood Districts; fully subsidized studio space for one-year in Tulsa's Arts and/or Greenwood Districts. Artists who qualify: contemporary artists and arts workers of any medium and/or discipline 21 years or older and a U.S. resident. Must pass a background check. U.S. Department of Arts and Culture for Artists Unite for a Green New Deal - a summer call series for anyone looking to get informed, inspired, connected, and engaged. The Green New Deal is an ambitious proposal that flips our fear of climate change on its head—a proposal rooted in a broad vision of social, economic, and racial equity that turns this emergency in to an opportunity to revitalize our own society and infrastructure, build the foundation of true sustainability, and address longstanding inequalities.  As artists and cultural workers, we know it’s our job to envision the better world we know is possible—and to invite others to help bring it into being. Join the USDAC for a three-part series of calls with artists, organizers, and thinkers to unpack the policy and science behind a Green New Deal, and to co-create cultural strategy for climate justice. Take part in shared learning that can lead to shared, creative action!"
