Dear Nurses,

Do you take time to celebrate the milestones in your career and personal life? Having recently celebrated nurse’s week, I hope each of you took time to recognize and celebrate all that you have accomplished in your nursing career. Was it a few seconds, or did you really let the good feelings resonate? I just finished reading Dr. Rick Hanson’s book, Hardwiring Happiness. He writes about the brain science of contentment, calm, and confidence. The book scientifically explains how our brains are like Velcro for negatives, and Teflon for positives. In one of the steps, he outlines how to change the neuroplasticity of our brains: take in the good, (for more than a few seconds). I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it.

Marketing - Media Kit: The phone rings, or you receive an email requesting an interview, podcast, article, appearance or an opinion; are you ready? Create a file, preferably electronic, that contains the following items for an effective media kit:
  • Personal Biography – one page, one paragraph and three sentence
  • Company History – brief story of how you started your business or career in nursing
  • List of articles and appearances
  • Your Photograph that is high quality and resolution
  • Endorsements and Testimonies
  • Signature – how you want your name to appear
You have opportunities to go back and fine tune or update your content. Having a media kit on file that is easily accessible gives you the confidence in being ready, placing your best foot forward, and never missing media opportunities!

Confidence has a hypnotic effect on people.

The first time I recognized it was at a flamenco show in Barcelona a few years back. I was mesmerized by the performance of a beautiful full-figured middle-aged woman. I couldn’t keep my eyes off her as she danced. My friends and I eventually dubbed her “the most confident woman in the world.”

It was like she bathed in a tub full of confidence on a daily basis. I knew if I had just a piece of what she exuded while on that stage, I would be unstoppable.

There’s data to back that up. Studies show that confidence is closely correlated with success, and even more so than competence.
There is no shortage of new companies creating exciting products and services for consumers. But, more often than not, we’ve seen that these companies treat marketing as a luxury — while they treat product development and raising capital as the only arenas they need to master to succeed.

Most entrepreneurs are familiar with the saying: the road to success is paved with failure. While there’s definitely some truth to this idiom, in 2016, 22% of startups failed in their first year, and 50% fail in only their fifth. This statistic could be true for a variety of reasons. But one thing is certain: to be on the succeeding side of these numbers, people need to buy your product or service.
Whenever I meet someone new who happens to be a nurse - in both clinical and social settings - I wait for the right moment to mention my work on AJN‘s Reflections column.

It’s not only that I’m proud of the column. It’s also that I’m forever on the lookout for that next submission—for a fresh, compelling story I just know is destined to shine (accompanied by a fabulous professional illustration) on the inside back page of AJN.

‘But I’m not exactly a writer…’

“I imagine you have a story or two to tell,” I’ll say to a nurse I’ve just met - which is the same thing I say, whenever I have the chance, to nurses I’ve known for years.
