When I was a kid, there were times I dreaded being sent to bed. When the lights were turned out, there was this irrational fear that suddenly something sinister was lurking in the shadows. Of course, as we grow older, we realize there is nothing in the darkness that was not there in the light, and that the shadows are nothing more than lifeless shapes that have no power.
But sometimes I wonder if we are still afraid of the dark as Christians. When evil rears its ugly head, and seems as if it will consume us, we may respond with shock and awe [a form of worship, by the way]. But the truth is that all darkness is temporary; smoke and mirrors.
I think it was Bill Johnson who said, “We cannot afford to be impressed by the enemy”. Philippians 1:27-28 puts it this way, “…[Strive] together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved – and that by God” (emphasis mine).
When we want to hide under the covers or run away, I pray that we remember that WE ARE THE LIGHT of the world! In deepest darkness is the place to ‘arise and shine, for your light has come’ [Isaiah 60:1].
