Subject: Announcing the Blueprint for Better Film Series at A’19

April 17, 2019

Are you heading to the AIA Conference on Architecture 2019 in Las Vegas June 6-8? Make plans to check out the Blueprint for Better Film Series, hosted in partnership with ADFF, which will be located at the Westgate Hotel’s Pavilion Four.

Marking the launch of the 2019 AIA Film Challenge, the Blueprint for Better Film Series will debut a new documentary short about how design can address climate change. The film highlights New York architect Illya Azaroff, AIA, who collaborated with federal agencies and building product manufacturers to design a resilient, sustainable home for Diane Hellriegel, who lost her home during Superstorm Sandy. Azaroff has made plans for the Hurricane Strong house available to architects and builders for free, in hopes that they will be used and modified to build homes capable of withstanding future disasters.

The Blueprint for Better Film Series at A’19 will feature 6 feature films and 4 unique short film programs with 6 short films each.

Some highlights of the short film programs include:

Designers have the power to shape the way we experience the environment, interact with others, and create common ground. Join us to watch a lineup of short films centered on architecture's intersection with culture.
Centerpiece films focus on the work of Renzo Piano and Peter Bohlin. Plus, meet designers creating a Blueprint for Better by renovating a historic theater in Cleveland, creating an entrepreneurial hub in Memphis, honoring traditions in Hawaii, and more.

As rapid urbanization continues to shift 21st century design practices, architects have the responsibility to lead. Join us for short films focused on urbanism and housing, beginning with a look at the history of a storied UK housing block. Then, learn how designers are creating a Blueprint for Better with housing solutions in communities around the world like Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Bangalore, Baja California, and Austin.

In the 1960s, frustrated by the growing problem of urban pollution, Athelstan Spilhaus, a visionary scientist and futurist comic strip writer, assembled a team of experts to develop a bold experiment: the Minnesota Experimental City (MXC). MXC would be the city of the future, a domed metropolis for 250,000 pioneering residents, built from scratch and using cutting-edge technology to prevent urban sprawl and pollution. Things didn’t quite go as planned, as explored in Chad Friedrichs’ fascinating look back at the would-be city of tomorrow.
