A MESSAGE FROM OUR MANAGERS

California Dreaming

“All the leaves are brown and the skies are gray, I’ve been for a walk on a winter’s day…”

Happy New Year’s everyone! 2020 is upon us, and along with a new year for Amy and me comes a whole new perspective! Everywhere we look and everywhere we go is new and alive!

Winter time in California, especially here at Wilbur Hot Springs, offers so many incredible hikes rich with history, sights, and gems! The weather is perfect for getting out and enjoying our quiet surroundings in the sanctuary and preserve, and I encourage everyone to follow the Mama’s & Papa’s advice and get out for a walk, with one slight twist - Explore!

WILBUR HISTORY - PART V

In the late 1970s the Sun Oil Company, owned by the Pew family of Philadelphia, arrived in Colusa County, and expressed their desire to engage in geothermal electricity production at Wilbur Hot Springs. I declined their offer.

Sun proceeded to sign contracts with Wilbur’s adjoining neighbors and made application, with Colusa County, to do geothermal drilling. I caused the creation of a historic environmental impact report, which was a first for Colusa County. Twenty-five lawyers, all Wilbur guests, volunteered to assist, pro-bono, in the environmental fight which took place over the next few years.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Guest Chef Weekend NYE Celebration
December 30 - January 1

Chef Marion’s meals are a main attraction, but it is Wilbur’s guests who make this New Year’s Eve celebration so fun and special! Even though this event sold out months ago, give us a call to get on the waiting list.

Chef Marion grew up in Germany in a house full of cooks and began her training in her parents’ restaurant. Once of age, she studied classical culinary arts in Germany, where she apprenticed in fine French cuisine for three years and cooked in several fine dining restaurants and a health clinic. In 1997 she moved to Big Sur, where she co-created a farm and homestead, raised goats, chickens, and bees and managed an extensive garden.

Guided Meditation with Shundo
December 28-29

As you unplug and slow down at Wilbur, take another step towards stillness and being grounded in your body by joining a meditation session with Shundo.

These meditation sessions are perfect for anyone who is curious about meditation, and also for those who already practice. At each session, there will be guidance in how to sit, and how to train your attention, time to sit in silence, and an opportunity to ask questions. They usually last around forty minutes.

Shundo is a zen priest who trained for fifteen years at San Francisco Zen Center, including five years of monastic life in the mountains at Tassajara. These days, he is interested in taking meditation out to people who might not ever set foot in a zen temple, and teaches in tech companies, the county jail, schools and colleges.

GUEST REFLECTIONS

“If you wish for a serene feeling of deliverance, healing, and restoration than Wilbur Hot Springs is the place for you. Accommodating customer service via phone, email and live in person. Use of large refrigerators and communal kitchen is absolutely fantastic! Day Use on non-holidays calculates to a little over $9 an hour after tax, that's great deal in my book.”
