VPOST is rooted in collaborative partnerships. Our Leadership Advisory Council (LAC) members represent organizations that bring their expertise and insight to work collectively with others across Virginia in the pursuit of increasing the availability and quality of afterschool opportunities in our Commonwealth. Join us in welcoming our three most recent members!
Angel Nelson is the Chief Operating Officer at the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula. Helping youth reach their full potential has been a passion of Angel’s for years. She's held many senior leadership positions at multiple chapters of Boys and Girls Clubs, as well as Girls Inc. Angel has served 20 years in the Navy and is a board member for Youth Sailing VA.
Gary Artybridge Jr. is the Manager of Corporate Citizenship and K-12 Education Partnerships at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a Division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. In his role at NNS, he is responsible for the STEM and career awareness programs, corporate philanthropic efforts and employee volunteer opportunities. A native of Virginia Beach, Gary lives in Hampton with his wife and son.
Michael Courtney is an Education Specialist at The Virginia Department of Education, Title IV, Part A and 21st CCLC, Office of ESEA Programs. Michael provides support and assistance to 21st CCLC programs in school divisions and community-based organizations. Before joining the Department, he was a school division Title II & IV grants coordinator. He began his career as an elementary classroom teacher and principal. |

VA ABC Alcohol Education and Prevention Grants
Alcohol Education and Prevention Grants provide funding to organizations that are working to prevent underage and high-risk drinking. Community coalitions, law enforcement, nonprofits, schools, colleges and universities, faith-based organizations and prevention-related groups are eligible. Grant applicants must address one or more of the following priorities: underage drinking prevention, social providing/social hosting prevention, or high-risk drinking prevention.

Every October, Lights On Afterschool draws attention to the impact made by afterschool programs. This year, Afterschool Alliance is holding a poster contest. The artist who comes up with the winning design, along with their afterschool program, will be featured on the Afterschool Alliance's materials for the nationwide event. There is a grand prize of $500! Deadline for submissions is April 29, 2020.

VPOST is looking for STEM programs to try out Facebook’s Engineer for the Week and provide feedback on the experience. The program is a free program for students ages 11 and up build a working tech product. Sites that are referred through VPOST and complete the program will receive $500!

Free SEL programming: Soar with Wings
Soar with Wings is a new, free, social emotional learning (SEL) program that offers a digital suite of activities, lessons, and resources designed to support the development of SEL skills in K-5 students. Sponsored by the Allstate Foundation, Soar with Wings can be used by educators in the classroom, in afterschool programs, and for parents and caregivers at home. In addition to activities for students, Soar with Wings provides professional learning videos and guides for educators.
