POLICY NEWS
On 11 April 2019, the EC announced that it will invest €195 million under Horizon 2020 to improve the research and innovation potential in seven Member States (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Portugal).
On 8 April 2019, the EC published a communication entitled “Building Trust in Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence”, presenting the next steps of its work on ethical guidelines on artificial intelligence (AI).
On 17 April 2019, the EU Parliament adopted the partial agreements resulting from inter-institutional negotiations on the two Horizon Europe proposals, the successor to Horizon 2020. Both partial agreements were adopted by a large majority of the Members of the European Parliament.
A call for expression of interest is still open until 10 May for high-level academics and researchers wishing to apply for the Commission Expert Group “European Innovation Council (EIC) Pilot Advisory Board”. This call provides an opportunity to support the European initiative to turn breakthrough ideas into innovations.
On 10 April 2019 the EC published a Question and Answer (Q&A) document on the interplay between the Clinical Trials Regulation (CTR) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
On 13 April 2019, the global forum on fair pricing and access to medicines , co-hosted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Government of South Africa was held in Johannesburg.
VPH COMMUNITY
A two-days workshop was organised in Leuven on 25-26 April 2019 to discuss how to tackle the validation challenge of in silico models for drug development.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requests feedback on a new discussion paper that proposes applying a “focused review” approach to premarket assessments of software as a medical device (SaMD) technologies that are powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).
This new project was recently funded the European Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking with the aim to revolutionise assessment of mobility loss using digital technology to lead to enhanced clinical trials and better clinical management.
In April 2019 the VPH project INSIST (in silico clinical trials for treatment of ischemic stroke) organised a discussion group to inform interested clinicians and to obtain their feedback on the concept, current state of the art, and intended further development of the project.

The Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group (IMAG) driven by Grace Peng has recently held a Top Model Video Competition to engage undergraduate students in the field and share examples of how computational modeling can impact human health.
