Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) 13 June 2019 - Sixth CBFP Council Meeting.  The High-Level Policy Dialogue was chaired by His Excellency Mr. François-Xavier de Donnea, Minister of State, CBFP Facilitator of the Kingdom of Belgium. The meeting was graced by politicians, Ministers of Forests/Environment of Central African countries and senior representatives of ECCAS, COMIFAC, OCFSA and GVTC.

The workshop to determine the scope of socio-cultural evaluation of ecosystem services provided to indigenous people and local communities in BSB Yamoussa and TNS was held from 14 to 16 August 2019 in Douala, Republic of Cameroon. The purpose of the workshop was to take stock of he socio-cultural services the complex ecosystems of the BSB Yamoussa and TNS protected areas provide to their indigenous people and local communities.

This article takes stock of the current process of institutionalising forest certification in the Congo Basin and analyses current interactions between the FLEGT process and certification. The article highlights the limitations of the VPAs concluded between the Congo Basin countries and the EU, and proposes a new distribution of roles between public and private instruments, namely the FLEGT/EUTR combined apparatus and certifications, and a mechanism of financial incentives based on differentiated forest taxation to support certified companies and encourage new ones to follow suit.

On the fourth of June two thousand and nineteen, the Commission room of the National Assembly in Yaounde hosted a “Knowledge sharing workshop for Parliamentarians and experts on implementing a legal framework for access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their use (ABS) in Cameroon).
 


This paper sought to examine how Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) activities and their contributions are represented in the post 2020 climate change commitments of African countries and assess the necessary conditions for their successful implementation. Secondary data on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) was collected from 52 African countries whereas primary data was obtained from Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.

Libreville, Gabon 13 June 2019_ the Environment enthusiast Lee White, a British-born Gabonese national, told the media at the close of the first Ministers’ Council that his appointment was a call for better governance and sustainable management of Gabon’s forests which are under threat.



On Sunday evening, 12 May 2019, the 49th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-49) adopted the Overview Chapter of the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (2019 Refinement) and accepted the underlying report.



In only four years, GCF has allocated over USD 5 billion of the USD 7 billion received from contributors. As a result, its Board launched the first GCF replenishment in October 2018. In a competitive global landscape, the announcements of Germany and Norway that they will double their national currency contributions have given a head start to the replenishment, sending a strong signal for others to follow.

The black mamba is the most venomous snake in sub-Saharan Africa. One bite can kill a person in just a few hours. It is also the namesake of the all-female anti-poaching unit that operates in the 56,000-acre private Balule Nature Reserve at Kruger National Park in South Africa.

New impact programs at heart of largest-ever proposed work program. Delegates are arriving in Washington DC for one of the most important Council meetings in the history of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It is expected to mark a pioneering shift of emphasis for the organization that was established on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to help tackle our planet’s most pressing environmental problems.

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (UN Decade) was established by the UN to provide a common framework for strengthening management of the world’s oceans for the benefit of humanity. The “informal” nature of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea (ICP) fosters an open exchange among participants and, for 2019, offered a unique opportunity to provide vital input to planning of the UN Decade.


The Bonn Climate Change Conference was expected to advance work on several issues to facilitate implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement, due for completion at the Santiago Climate Change Conference in December 2019.

The Africa-China workshop will seek to facilitate a constructive science-policy dialogue between key stakeholders involved in the governance of Chinese forestry investments in Africa. Participants to the workshop will include scientists, policy-makers, local communities, private and non-state actors, and journalists.




The sixth session of the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2019) took place at the International Conference Center Geneva (CICG), from 13-17 May 2019, and was organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Government of Switzerland on the theme of “Resilience Dividend: Towards Sustainable and Inclusive Societies.”

It drew close to twenty participants including the Consultant responsible for developing COMIFAC’s knowledge management strategy, Experts from GIZ’s Regional Project to Support COMIFAC, the RIOFAC Project, the COMIFAC Executive Secretariat and the Cameroon CNC representative.

The Working Group also agreed on a package of measures, also known as the growth plan, which simultaneously adopts the revised Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) and the amendment of Annex I. Negotiations continued on the draft revised SMTA. Consensus was reached on several provisions, with genetic sequence data (also addressed as digital sequence information) and rates for benefit-sharing payments remaining as the main outstanding issues.

REN21 is an international policy network of experts from governments, inter-governmental organisations, industry associations, NGOs, and science and academia. REDD+ is vital for global efforts to combat climate change. The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015 and entering into force in 2020, treats forests as an integral part of the climate solution, and highlights REDD+ as key intervention to achieve the new ambitious global target.


The 56th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council adopted the largest-ever Work Program for the GEF Trust Fund, totaling USD 865.9 million and comprising 31 projects, seven programs, and three multi-trust fund projects. The Work Program features four Impact Programs (IPs), designed to deliver transformational change, covering: food systems, land use, and restoration (FOLUR); Amazon forests; Congo Basin forests; and dryland landscapes.

(CNN)Fires are raging at a record rate in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, and scientists warn that it could strike a devastating blow to the fight against climate change...The European Union's satellite program, Copernicus, released a map showing smoke from the fires spreading all along Brazil to the east Atlantic coast. The smoke has covered nearly half of the country and is even spilling over into neighboring Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay.



A consultation workshop was held on 15 and 16 July 2019 in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, on the implementation of pilot initiatives of the Sangha ri-National (TNS) to support of the Regional GIZ COMIFAC Support Project for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (PACL) in Central Africa.

Organized by the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) with the technical and financial assistance of TRAFFIC, the workshop was chaired by the COMIFAC Executive Secretary, Mr. Raymond NDOMBA NGOYE.




Congolaise Industriel du Bois (CIB) will receive its FSC® Forest Management follow-up audit of its 4 concessions in the Sangha Department in order to maintain its certificates (4 FM/COC) according to the Forest Management requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council®. It is planned to carry out the evaluation audit on September 9 to 23, 2019.

The EU has opened the door to regulating supply chains to minimise the risk of deforestation associated with commodity imports to the EU. Fern welcomes this long-awaited move with cautious optimism and looks forward to working with the next European Commission on developing such a regulation, provided it pays equal attention to human rights. Fern believes actions, not words, will determine whether the EU is serious about tackling the impact it has on forests, and the millions of people that directly depend on them.
