Dear Colleagues,
The last month has seen a significant amount of time and effort spent influencing and networking at the European level, not least during the "European Science: Global Challenges, Global Collaboration" conference, hosted by the Irish Presidency (see more below). The potential for the activities within the VPH community to contribute to the highly topical challenges in health was discussed in one to one sessions with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and as part of the discussions in open forum. Good progress has been made in bringing together the classical molecular Systems Biology and Physiology/Physics drive modelling communities to create a concerted vision of the contribution that these approaches can make to the emerging " 50 Year Roadmap for the Future of Medicine", which is an initiative that is being developed as part of the scientific agenda of the current Irish Presidency. These interactions have continued after the Conference with additional one to one interviews with MEPs, Senior Scientific Advisors and Commission representatives during April, all aimed at raising awareness of VPH, its objectives and activities. European Parliament opens the doors to VPH Dr Adriano Henney, Prof Peter Coveney and Dr Riam Kanso represented VPH in strategic meetings with Members of the European Parliament to discuss how VPH can offer sustainable solutions for increasingly problematic health issues.

VPHOP VPHOP developed and assessed a new technology that uses computer models of the musculoskeletal biomechanics, individualised over imaging and sensing data, to predict the risk of bone fracture in fragile elders affected by a metabolic disease called osteoporosis. |

| M-X-L MXL enhanced the safety of osteoarthritis patients, undergoing surgery, using computational computational modelling from clinically available x-rays, so to minimize the risk of overload and instability for optimized function and joint longevity. |

Digital Patient definition high on the DISCIPULUS agenda The revision of the definition of the Digital Patient was one of the highlighted discussion points at the last DISCIPULUS project meeting that took place at the UCL Bloomsbury campus on March 18th, 2013. The discussion focused on what makes the ‘Digital Patient’: descriptive, integrative and predictive. |
