Insight Innovation Awards
Virtual event — Aug. 19, 2020, 4 p.m.
We are officially two weeks away from our first virtual broadcast of the Insight Innovation Awards! The 2020 Insight Innovation Awards program will stream live at 4 p.m. on Aug. 19 on Facebook Live and Insight’s YouTube channel.

This year’s Insight Innovation Awards will honor four organizations in the following categories:

People: CESA 6
Planet: St. Norbert College
Process: Lanehub Inc.
Product: Appvion Operations

We had so many great submissions this year that there will also be a special award given to one of the remaining nominees! Be sure to tune in on Aug. 19 to see who will be recognized with our special Insight Innovation Award!

With the event’s focus on innovation, it only seems fitting that Craig Dickman, the managing director of TitletownTech and a past winner of an Insight Innovation Award for Breakthrough Fuel, is the event’s keynote speaker. A well-known inventor, entrepreneur and business executive, you won’t want to miss Craig’s insights on innovation and entrepreneurship.

If you still need to register for the event or if you want more details, please click HERE. If you have already registered, you will receive an email two days before and on the day of the event with the direct link to Insight’s Facebook Live and YouTube channel where you’ll be able to watch it all. The live feed of the event will also be posted HERE.

Start thinking about what you can do while watching the Insight Innovation Awards to make it memorable. Consider organizing your own watch party with family, friends and colleagues so you can come together (virtually) to cheer on and congratulate our five winners and nominees.

Congratulations again to all the winners and nominees ... our region is truly blessed to have businesses and organizations who encourage and support such innovation!

WisconsinInno
The TitletownTech venture capital fund, a $25 million fund and venture studio led by the Green Bay Packers and Microsoft, is investing in a Wisconsin agriculture technology startup that makes hydroponic systems.

Appleton-based Fork Farms’ indoor vertical farming system, called the Flex Farm, was designed to eliminate food transportation costs, consume 97% less water than traditional agriculture practices, and be 40% more energy efficient compared to hydroponic systems currently in the market.

“Low accessibility of fresh food is a huge problem for many people, and Fork Farms is a great example of local entrepreneurs chasing a big opportunity to make positive change,” said Craig Dickman,

UWO survey: COVID-19 grounding business travel
Insight On Business
Businesses responding to the fourth statewide University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh COVID-19 economic impact survey showed gains, rather than losses, on several key indicators but expressed extreme caution in their business and personal travel plans.

“Among top-line impacts, the July survey showed significant growth over previous months, largely reflecting businesses operating in a fully open but constrained environment,” says Jeffrey Sachse, interim director of the UW-Oshkosh Center for Customized Research and Services.

For the first time, survey respondents were asked to share their perspectives on business and personal travel during the pandemic, with 65 percent....

Digging for answers: Microsoft’s AI tools aid students looking for new antibiotics
Insight On Business
Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about what’s in the dirt beneath our feet. That’s not the case for University of Wisconsin-Green Bay students studying soil samples to discover previously unknown bacteria, which could lead to the development of new antibiotics.

The students are part of the Tiny Earth project, a global network of educators who teach a research course aimed at discovering new antibiotics that started at UW-Madison in 2018. The course provides students with the opportunity for original thinking and scientific discovery and can inspire them to pursue STEM careers. About 10,000 students are enrolled in some version of the Tiny Earth course throughout 45 U.S. states and 15 countries.

“The students get their own soil sample to test. They isolate bacteria, conduct gene sequencing and do a lot of other interesting...

Fincantieri plans Sturgeon Bay yard upgrade
Insight On Business
Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding is preparing to upgrade its Sturgeon Bay shipyard equipment and facilities this year to assist with work on the Navy’s new guided-missile frigate.

The improvements will be within the current shipyard’s perimeter. On the south end of the yard near Georgia Street, the buildings formerly owned and operated by Palmer Johnson Yachts will become the hub for government work, including the LCS and FFG(X) programs. The manufacturer will expand or update some buildings to accommodate the larger fabrication efforts, a blast/prime/paint building and more room for support services. This week, the company is filing permits with the city to approve....
