A Model of Perfect Love - Cheryl Weber
1 Corinthians 13 is commonly used as a reference for how we should love others. First and foremost however, it is a vivid picture of how God loves us. He models love and then asks us to love in the same way. He is not a God who asks us to do something he has not already done.
The opening verses of this chapter tell us that even the most spiritual acts are useless without love. But everything God does is fueled by love. He didn't overlook our sins but dealt with them through the death of his son Jesus on the cross. "For God so loved the world that he gave…." (John 3:16 KJV) And then, for all those who repent and believe, he makes us the righteousness of God (2 Cor. 5:21 NIV).
Not only does the love of God save us, transform us, and give us eternal life but it is a joy-filled, positive love that sees who and what we can become as his children. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says, "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance." (NLT).
When God enables us to love as he loved, the world will be changed.
PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for sending Jesus as the perfect expression of your perfect love. Help us to receive your unconditional, unending love for us and enable us to then love others in the same way. Amen.
