Assalamualaikum,

I pray that your Ramadan is going well. I've been using our efficiency checklist and it's been working wonders for me by reminding me of some of my goals. Research shows that goals written down have a 50% higher chance of being achieved. If you haven't got it yet, you can download it for free by clicking here

Some reminders I would like to bring to your attention:
  • June 30 is the end of the financial year in Australia and it falls in the last 10 days of Ramadan.
  • The National Zakat Foundation is DGR certified - meaning all your donations are 100% tax deductible.
  • NZF Australia distributes 100% of your Zakat to those who need it locally.
I understand that you may have questions about the legitimacy of claiming your Zakat / Sadaqah donations as tax deductions, so I thought I would respond to some of the most frequently asked questions about Zakat below. I hope you find it beneficial.
Q1: Is claiming Zakat as a tax deduction OK?

A1: Yes it is. You are not claiming your Zakat back. You are claiming your tax back from the government as you have made a charitable donation to a registered local charity. However if that does not sit well with you, these are the 3 options you have:
  • Don’t claim it as a tax deduction.
  • Claim it as a tax deduction and then give the refund as Sadaqah.
  • Claim it as a tax deduction and keep the money.
Q2: Should I pay my Zakat in Ramadan?

A2: Not necessarily, as the ruling around paying Zakat is at the end of the ‘Hawl’ year, meaning once one lunar year passes over the money, Zakat is due on it. Many Muslims choose to pay it during Ramadan out of convenience and also being eager to gain more rewards from Allah during this blessed month.

Zakat can be paid at any time of the year as long as it is done annually. You can also setup an on-going automatic payment and pay your Zakat in advance in installments.
Q3: How do I calculate my Zakat?

A3: Calculating your Zakat may sound like a difficult task, but with the right tools it's actually quite simple. If you visit our website, you can try our free Zakat Calculator and also download our free Zakat Guides to assist you. If your circumstances are more complex, you can request a free one-on-one session with us, to assist you with your calculation. Call us on 1300 663 729.

Also, our MyZakat mobile app is in the final stages of testing and should be ready very soon insha Allah.

A5:  To request your tax receipt please provide your payment details  via email to accounts.receivable@nzf.org.au. In the case of urgent requests you may call us on 1300 663 729 to fast track your process.

We aim to make this process simple and quick. Please allow up to 5 business days for this process to be completed, and up to 7 business days during Ramadan due to high demand.
I hope you find these reminders beneficial. Zakat & Tax has been a recent topic of discussion since Ramadan has been falling around the end of financial year but do think about it:

By paying your Zakat during Ramadan your rewards are already multiplied. Why not further increase these rewards financially by paying your Zakat, Sadaqah and Fitr before the end of financial year (Thursday, 30 June 2016), claiming them as tax deductions, and then, increase your rewards even further by giving away the tax claimed back in Sadaqah?
Truly, Allah is the Greatest!

We are extremely grateful for your on-going support in enabling us to continue this vital work of helping some of the neediest members of our own community.
