FURLOUGHED NURSE WRITES CHILDREN'S BOOK ABOUT PANDEMIC
I was furloughed in May due to the pandemic and decided to use my furlough time wisely and write a children’s book about the pandemic to help parents, teachers, and children. My grandson had given me the idea for the book one night early in April when we were chatting about him going home the next day. He had been visiting for a few days and did not want to go home. I told him he had to go home and get back to school. He had already had school canceled for over a month due to the pandemic, but the word was they were starting back the next week. He said, “Grandma, I’m not going back to school.” and I asked him why? He replied, “You know Grandma, because of that “thing.” Little did we know at that time, but the virus he referred to as a “thing” would truly keep him from going to school for quite some time. Basically, I discovered a problem, and writing a children's book would solve the problem of the lack of knowledge young children have about the pandemic and help them better understand why all the changes are happening because of the pandemic.
I have had such great luck with just going out and networking my book after being furloughed. There are so many avenues that can be taken advantage of, even amid a pandemic! I donated my book (Alez Learns About Germs) https://www.amazon.com/author/karenhoward to the local library, and then the library put the book in the local paper, which was then was viewed by a local TV station. I got the call the next day after donating the book to do a TV interview. After the first interview, I proceeded to contact another local channel, and they interviewed me on the day I contacted them and then aired the interview that evening. I have to say my book sales skyrocketed after both interviews.
It is amazing the many ways you can sell yourself out there if you think outside of the box and realize that the sky is the limit as far as networking. I also have offered to read my book via Zoom to children learning from home, and also to classrooms. I have only had one opportunity to read to children that were being homeschooled, but I am hopeful for more opportunities soon.

Unfortunately, I was notified that my job was being eliminated in late July, but once again, after going quickly through the stages of grief over the loss of my job, I soon saw an opportunity. The job elimination actually just led to more time for me to market my book. I was excited!

My new niche has become blog writing around senior health, and age discrimination in the post-pandemic workforce. Writing a sequel to my children's book is not off the table, but I’m still enjoying marketing this book. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box, evaluate the situation, look for potential opportunities and take that pivotal action!! https://www.optlifenurse.com/post/quite-well-in-the-pandemic-of-2020-my-story

Patty’s best advice for nurses interested in starting a business “Start with the end in mind. Take the time to see your ideal outcome and work backwards”.

Patty is a serial entrepreneur and she recently created “Embrace Active Aging” an all in one medical, health and wellness and emotional support Facebook group.

When I think about all the patients  and their loved ones I  have worked with over the years, I know most of them don’t  remember me, nor I them. But I do know that I gave a little piece  of myself to each of  them, and they to me, and those threads  make up the tapestry that is my career in nursing.
