Dear IIDR Members & Trainees,
Welcome to the IIDR eNews! Every month, take a look at the exciting things happening within our institute regarding infectious disease research.
During the past month, I have had the pleasure of meeting with several IIDR principal investigators and trainees. I have learned about our member's areas of interest, past achievements, and present research endeavours, and am compelled by the outstanding strength and diversity within our institute. The IIDR's representatives punch above their weight in research intensity - they are eager to learn, enthusiastic to teach, and passionate about making a difference towards improved global healthcare. I am honoured to be a part of such a dedicated and admirable team.
Connectivity is highly important in keeping our members engaged and informed about our current successes, challenges, changes, and opportunities. I therefore encourage you to share your stories and ideas with me, as every message - whether big or small - has the ability to inspire.

DNA deepens mystery of Newfoundland's lost Beothuk people
In one of the largest ancient population studies to date, IIDR's Dr. Hendrik Poinar and post-doctorate fellow Ana Duggan sequence DNA from Beothuk, Maritime Archaic, and Paleo-Eskimo remains to better understand the compelling population dynamics between the lost indigenous peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador.
