CMCB Facility Highlight: The LECO 2D Gas Chromatography with Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (GCxGC-TOFMS)
The GCxGC-TOFMS allows for optimal GC/MS performance, including advanced separation capabilities, powerful productivity enhancements and real-time self-monitoring instrument intelligence. The GCxGC-TOFMS is well suited for the separation and identification of analytes in complex samples, and uses two columns with different separation characteristics for the highly accurate separation of target compounds. With the GCxGC, hundreds to thousands of compounds can be detected in each run, increasing efficiency and productivity for samples that are too complex for conventional GC-MS systems. November ID / IIDR Combined Rounds: Probiotics, Diarrhea, and the Microbiome
Diarrhea remains the 2nd leading cause of death in children under the age of five. In this month’s ID/IIDR Combined Rounds, infectious disease investigators Dr. Michael Surette and Dr. Jeffrey Pernica discussed the effects of childhood diarrheal disease on the human microbiome and presented their current studies regarding the use of probiotics as an effective treatment for this devastating disease. |

Exploiting the Sensitivity of Nutrient Transporter Deletion Strains in Discovery of Natural Product Antimetabolites
In their recent publication, IIDR members from Dr. Eric Brown's lab, in collaboration with Dr. Gerry Wright's lab screen actinomycete-derived extracts against nutrient transporter deletion strains to design a target-specific approach that increases the detection of antimetabolites from natural sources. Magarvey Lab Describes Antibiotics & Specialized Metabolites from the Human Microbiota
A genetic analysis of sequenced human microbiota isolates reveal a huge pool of undiscovered antibiotics. Further, these specialized chemicals may be better at targeted human therapies than current broad spectrum antibiotics. Within Dr. Nathan Magarvey’s lab, IIDR students Walaa Mousa, Bilal Athar, and Nisanth Merwin catalogue and describe the totality of antibiotics discovered from human origin, and relays their role in disease.

Brown Lab Student Reviews the "Use of Genetic and Chemical Synthetic Lethality as Probes of Complexity in Bacterial Cell Systems"
Masters student Kristina Klobucar and her supervisor Dr. Eric Brown review the fields of genomics and chemical genomics to provide an overview of synthetic lethality screening and the power of these methods in studying biology and creating opportunities for antibacterial therapy. |

IIDR Graduate Students Review the "Evolution of Salmonella - Host Cell Interactions through a Dynamic Bacterial Genome"
IIDR graduate students Bushra Ilyas and Caressa Tsai of Dr. Brian Coombes lab review their current understanding of how genome evolution has shaped the pathogenic interactions of Salmonella with their hosts during infection, and how high-throughput technologies and the advent of transcriptomics is advancing our understanding of the evolution of bacterial pathogenesis.
