Full success of the first China-Africa dialogue workshop jointly organized by the African Forest Policies and Politics (AFORPOLIS) and the Global Environmental Institute (GEI) in partnership with the University of Göttingen in Germany, the University of Dschang in Cameroon, the IUFRO, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the CBFP, the CIFOR, and the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife. (MINFOF) - Cameroon.[nbsp] The first Africa-China AFORPOLIS workshop is mainly sponsored by UKAID and supported by an additional contribution from the CBFP.





The Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the International Trade In Endangered Species (COP18 CITES) also known as the World Wildlife Conference took place in Geneva in the Congress and Exhibition Center from 17-18 August 2019. The Executive Secretariat was represented at the Geneva meeting by Mr. Raymond Ndomba Ngoye, Executive Secretary and Mr. Chouaibou Nchoutpouen, Biodiversity Expert.




In summary, the African Heads of State who took the floor on Monday in New York presented similar reports. They each presented a list of steps taken: here, to preserve or expand forests like the DRC, Gabon, Ethiopia or Congo-Brazzaville, for instance ; there, short or medium term plans to phase out diesel or coal-fueled power plants and fast-track the transition towards clean energy  in the next ten or twenty years like  Djibouti, the Seychelles or Nigeria.




The overall aim is to provide a framework for the members of the said College to take ownership of emerging themes relating to conservation, sustainable forest management, the fight against climate change and better livelihoods for forest communities in order to develop in a participatory manner, standards and indicators for a monitoring and evaluation system to enable each country and the sub-region to assess the impact of the  projects and investments implemented to foster conservation, and for the benefit of the GDF, the fight against climate change and  IPCLs.

The Gabonese Minister of Forestry has welcomed Norway’s decision to pay Libreville for its efforts against deforestation and reminded the industrialized countries of the urgent need for action.






(CNN) In an effort to fight climate change, the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) announced Sunday that Gabon will be paid $150 million in international funds to preserve its rainforest. Through the initiative, Norway will support Gabon with the funds to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and battle deforestation. The announcement was made at the Climate Action Summit in New York, where world leaders gathered to discuss how to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.



This article focuses on France’s National Strategy Against Imported Deforestation (SNDI) which it adopted in 2018. In order to successfully implement the strategy, the article advocates for the European Union to draw distinctions between customs duties on imports of agricultural, forest and livestock products. It further recommends raising duties on products that may be derived from deforestation in favor of “zero deforestation” certified products and giving small-scale farmers the financial support they need to transition towards sustainable practices.




Paris, 3 September - On the occasion of the visit of President Sassou Nguesso in Paris, President Emmanuel Macron today signed a Letter of Intent committing 65 million US dollars for the preservation of the rainforest in the Republic of Congo.
 


The second issue of the newsletter of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme has just been published. This issue presents the latest progress in the implementation of the programme during the second quarter of 2019 across the thirteen countries covered by the Programme in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of States.

It is common knowledge that planting trees tackles the causes of climate change by absorbing carbon emissions. Less known is the fact that forests also treat the symptoms of climate change, whether they are heatwaves, drought or crumbling coastal towns.

Sunday 2 September, Beijing – On 2 September, INBAR and Cameroon formally agreed to establish a new INBAR Regional Office in Central Africa, in a signing ceremony held at the Embassy of Cameroon in Beijing, China.

The 6th edition of the Africa Agri Forum will be taking place for the second year in a row in Libreville, from 24 to 25 October to cement Gabon’s central place as an emerging hub of agriculture in the region.

Held at the Mickhael’s hotel in the Republic of the Congo from 3 to 5 September 2019, the workshop’s overall aim was to conduct the operational planning of the PI (Pilot Initiative) and define implementation conditions.



Brazzaville-Republic of Congo, 28 July- 1st August 2019. Two multi-institutional capacity building workshops on investigations into wildlife crimes were held for law enforcement officers at the Mikhael’s Hotel.



Recommendations: Intersectoral coordination: The NDC period demands the transformation of all development sectors in the Central African countries. Sectoral development policies and/or strategies must be reviewed to increase their resilience (adaptation) and reduce their carbon emissions (mitigation). A focal point for each international agreement within each ministry is not enough to achieve the transformational changes required by climate transition.

Recommendations to improve the sustainability of the palm oil sector in the Congo Basin include (1) improving access to finance for smallholders and non-industrial mill managers; (2) implementing policies to safeguard natural resources and facilitate access to appropriate market opportunities that offer incentives to prevent future deforestation; (3) intensifying production by replanting aging plantations, rehabilitating abandoned plantations with disease-resistant and high-yielding varieties, and increasing fertilization, without further expansion into high conservation value or high carbon stock forest areas...

The IPCC approved and accepted Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate at its 51st Session held on 20 – 23 September 2019. The approved Summary for Policymakers (SPM) was presented at a press conference on 25 September 2019.

The Landscape management expert, Cameroon, will perform its responsibilities under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project entitled " Removing barriers to biodiversity conservation, land restoration and sustainable forest management through COmmunity-BAsed LAndscape Management – COBALAM ". LOCATION: West Cameroon/Bafoussam. DEADLINE: October 31, 2019




This call for proposals spearheaded by ECOWAS is entrenched in the strategic frameworks at regional (ECOWAP 2025) and national (CDN). It constitues one pf the main activities of Outcome 3 (EO3) of the  GCCA + West Africa program : EO3. Pilot adaptation projects, including solutions based on an ecosystemic approach, already tested and implemented in the ECOWAS countries and used as references for future replication are scaled (extension or replication).
