Researchers Discover a a New Way to Find Antibiotics in Dirt


Their method, published this week in Nature Biotechnology, may help guide drug discovery by allowing researchers to reassess the potential of bacteria that have already been mined for rare or new compounds with antibiotic activity.

The IIDR and Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences will be hosting Dr. Konstantin Korotkov to McMaster University on Thursday, September 19, 2019. Dr. Korotkov is an Associate Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He is set to give a lecture from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. in HSC 4E20. Coffee and cookies will be served at 9:45am.

The Braley Fellows Program was established through the David Braley Centre for Antibiotic Discovery to provide a broad understanding of antimicrobial resistance from diagnosis, tracking, and surveillance to clinical management. Participation in the Program provides an exciting opportunity for IIDR trainees to expand their professional network and future career opportunities. We invite all IIDR Postdoctoral Fellows interested in speaking during Day 2 of our 2019 Gairdner Symposium on Friday, November 15th to submit a 250 word Abstract of their research project and a CV to iidr@mcmaster.ca for consideration. The Fellow must be studying in the area of AMR and be supervised by a member of the IIDR.

We invite all IIDR faculty members with research interests in AMR to submit one poster for display during the lunch and poster session on 
Day 2 of our 2019 Gairdner Symposium on Friday, November 15th. The poster is to encompass the nature of the labs AMR work, must follow a provided poster template, and must be accompanied during the lunch hour by one selected lab representative (either graduate level or PDF). If interested in submitting a poster, please let Christy know (iidr@mcmaster.ca) before Friday, September 20th. Additional details regarding poster guidelines will follow.

Assistant / Associate Professor (3 Positions)

The Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) at Rutgers University, in conjunction with the departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Neuroscience & Cell Biology, and Pharmacology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School seek outstanding candidates for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor to fill three new faculty positions. Successful candidates will be provided with competitive start-up packages, access to high performance computing clusters and other core resources, and modern laboratory space at CABM, and will be expected to develop and maintain strong, externally funded research programs, and participate in collaborative projects with other Departments and Institutes on the campus. Senior Research Associate

Dr. Roger Draheim from the School of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences, University of Portsmouth is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Scientist with experience in molecular biology and microbiology to work on an InnovateUK-funded project. The candidate will employ synthetic microbiology to screen novel small molecules and traditional Chinese medicine with an overall aim to minimize generation of resistance to human antibiotics during pig production. The post is available for two years and is part of a £2.2 million research project carried out in collaboration with Oxford Drug Design (UK), Huazhong Agricultural University (Wuhan, China) and Wuhan HVSEN Biotechnology Co.,Ltd. Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, in conjunction with Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position for up to three years in the Van Domselaar Lab for Bioinformatics. The project will focus on the development of improved security, privacy, and data access controls for IRIDA, an end-to-end system for the storage, management, analysis, sharing, and reporting of next-generation sequencing data for microbial genomics. Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba, in conjunction with Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position for up to three years in the Van Domselaar Lab for Bioinformatics. Postdoctoral Fellow (3 Positions)

Dr. Robert Beiko's Lab within the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia is seeking 3 Postdoctoral Fellows for work on the ARETE project - a project that focuses on using lateral gene transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes in environmental and agri-food contexts with bioinformatics approaches. All PDFs will collaborate with other members of the project team, and be expected to give presentations and prepare journal articles based on their work. Postdoctoral Fellow

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MICB) at the University of British Columbia is seeking a full time Postdoctoral Fellow to lead the Experiential Data science for Undergraduate Cross-disciplinary Education (EDUCE) initiative. EDUCE develops and delivers data science modules in undergraduate MICB courses to progressively build student computational competency and data literacy. The principal responsibilities of the PDF include the co-development and delivery of reproducible data science curriculum in MICB courses, the coordination, training, and evaluation of EDUCE teaching assistants, the evaluation of EDUCE and course material effectiveness toward publication in peer-reviewed journals, and the coordination and promotion of co-curricular opportunities like workshops. Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Jamie Hook from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow. The candidate will be a part of the Pulmonary Division and the Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute, a small group of investigators led by flu expert Adolfo Garcia-Sastre. The lab’s goal is to determine cellular and molecular mechanisms of lung injury and repair in staphylococcus- and influenza-infected alveoli. Their aim is to understand how juxtacrine and paracrine communication among lung alveolar cells determines epithelial viability, immune responses, and barrier loss and restoration. Postdoctoral Fellow

A position for a postdoctoral researcher is available in the research laboratory of Dr. Christian Baron at the Université de Montréal beginning as early as September 2019. The project is focussed on the regulation of autotrophic sulfur metabolism and on the characterization of bacterial isolates and of communities from mining environments. The research is being conducted in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Toronto (Lesley Warren) and UC Berkeley (Jill Banfield) in the context of a Genome Canada and Genome Québec-funded project. Interested candidates should have experience with, or be interested in working with environmental bacteria and should be well versed in bacteriology and molecular microbiology methods. Postdoctoral Fellow

This CIHR-funded Postdoctoral Fellow position in Aging & Immunity within Dr. Dawn Bowdish's Lab will study how aging, and specifically age-associated inflammation alters myeloid cell development and macrophage function. This will include performing flow cytometry assays to quantitate development and maturation of myeloid cells in human blood and, depending on the applicant’s interest and aptitude, may include animal models. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a research project including all required experimental optimization, liaise with collaborators and research participants from multiple sights, and write manuscripts to communicate research findings. Research Technician

This CIHR-funded, 12-month tech position within Dr. Dawn Bowdish's Lab will study how the immune system changes with age using mouse models. This position is suitable for someone with an MSc or strong experience in mouse models or immunology. The successful applicant will be handling mouse breeding and inventory, liaising with animal care technicians to deal with health issues, ordering reagents for lab members, maintaining financial records, enforcing safety regulations and maintaining lab inventories. Research responsibilities will include working independently to perform studies of how the immune system changes with age and will include tissue collection, metabolic and behavioural testing, and creating bone marrow chimeras. Postdoctoral Fellow

The Department of Chemistry and Biology, Faculty of Science at Ryerson University welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct original research on the regulation and function of lysosome adaptation in immune cells under the mentorship of Dr. Roberto Botelho. Specifically, the PDF will work on a project aimed at better understanding how macrophages and/or dendritic cells adapt their lysosomal system in response to infection signals and the functional outcomes for resolving infections, antigen presentation, and immunity. This research will be conducted using both murine mouse models and primary cell cultures and employ a variety of genetics, cell biology, and biochemical tools that includes transcriptome and translatome analyses, antigen presentation assays, and fluorescence microscopy. Postdoctoral Fellow

The Department of Chemistry and Biology, Faculty of Science at Ryerson University welcomes applications for a postdoctoral fellow to conduct original research on the regulation and function of phosphoinositide signaling lipids under the mentorship of Dr. Roberto Botelho and Dr. Costin Antonescu. The PDF will work on projects aimed at better understanding how cells establish the acyl specificity of phosphoinositide lipids and the functional importance of phosphoinositide acyl specificity. This research will be conducted using mammalian cell culture models and employ a variety of genetics, cell biology, and biochemical tools that includes CRISPR-based genome editing, BioID-based proteomics, and super-resolution microscopy to define the regulation and function of phosphoinositide acyl specificity. Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Ulrika Islander's Lab within the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden is looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in immunology / inflammation. Dr. Islanders research group studies the influence of sex hormones on the immune system during inflammatory conditions caused by autoimmunity, allergy or infections. The post-doc will work with breeding and characterization of genetically modified mice in order to answer the research questions posed in the projects. Besides animal models, cell isolation and cell culture techniques are also used in the projects. The work includes writing of grant applications and scientific publications, as well as assistance in supervision of PhD students and other students. Learn more about the position and apply here.
Volunteers (Ages 20 to 40)

Dr. Dawn Bowdish's Lab at McMaster University is looking for volunteers between the ages of 20 and 40 for their study on how the immune system controls upper respiratory microbiota. Donors will need to donate about 2.5 mls of blood, a nasal swab, a nasal brushing and nasal secretions. Interested participants are encouraged to contact Dr. Bowdish at bowdish@mcmaster.ca for more information.
