Meet The 2018 NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Supplement Winner, Dr. Erin McConnell
It is our pleasure to announce the 2018 NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Supplement recipient, Dr. Erin McConnell. Erin is a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Yingfu Li's lab, where she leads a team of researchers who are focused on the development of technologies for the detection of the pathogenic bacteria, Legionella pneumophila, in contaminated water sources.

| | | Dr. Wright Makes 2018 List of The World’s Most Cited Researchers
17 McMaster researchers have been included on the 2018 list of the world’s most cited researchers. The list, compiled by Clarivate Analytics, recognizes science and social science researchers whose papers rank in the top 1% of citations for field and year in Web of Science, a citation index. Approximately 4,000 researchers across 21 specific categories were named to the list this year, with an additional 2,000 researcher named for their influence across disciplines.

Congratulations to Dr. Karen Mossman and Dr. Lesley MacNeil from the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical sciences on being nominated for the 2018 President's Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision. Both professors were nominated for demonstrating excellent supervisory and mentoring skills, and were acknowledged at this year's Graduate Students Awards Ceremony. |

As part of the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences seminar series, and co-hosted with the Chemical Biology Graduate Program, Dr. Jake Magolan will be hosting Dr. James Hougland from Syracuse University this Friday, November 30th. Dr. Hougland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, and will be discussing how his research group is applying chemical, biochemical, and computational approaches to investigate ghrelin acylation by human GOAT (hGOAT). Dr. John Hassell and his research team from the Departments of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences and Pathology and Molecular Medicine will be presenting with William Gwynne (PhD Candidate) and Shahbaz Shakeel (MSc Candidate) on December 4th. Through their lecture, they will recount their recent efforts to functionally validate one of the serotonin receptors as a suitable molecular target for drug development. | IIDR Seminar: "Discovery, biosynthesis and bioengineering of antibiotics from Gram-negative bacteria” Friday, December 14th, 11:30am - 12:30pm, HSC 1A6, McMaster University
The IIDR will be hosting Dr. Greg Challis, Monash-Warwick Alliance Professor of Sustainable Chemistry (Chemical and Synthetic Biology). In his lecture, the discovery of antibiotics from Burkolderia and other Gram-negative bacterial genera, with activity against drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Acinetobacter baumannii, will be presented. Efforts to understand the biosynthesis of these metabolites will be discussed and application of the knowledge gained to bioengineer the production of novel analogues with enhanced bioactivity will be described. Coffee, tea, and cookies will be served at 11:15am. |

| Participants Needed for CIHR-Funded Tuberculosis Booster Vaccine Study
The research team of IIDR's Dr. Fiona Smaill and Dr. Zhou Xing is looking for healthy participants who were born outside of Canada to enroll in their CIHR–supported tuberculosis booster vaccine study. The purpose of this Phase 1, open-label clinical trial is to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of their adenovirus-based tuberculosis vaccine, administered by aerosol. The Respiratory Infection and Vaccine Group in the Clinical Sciences Department, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine currently has a vacancy for a motivated PDRA immunologist to lead research on immune responses to human pneumococcal carriage and pneumococcal vaccines. The PDRA will champion the development and delivery of research specifically in mucosal immunity and immune aging, in addition to participating in the production and dissemination of research outputs and will train junior scientists in laboratory techniques and data analysis. | Call for Research Participants: Dr. Dawn Bowdish’s Lab
Dr. Dawn Bowdish's team at McMaster University is looking for male volunteers over 40 years of age to participate in a research study. The purpose of their study is to investigate how age-related changes in immune responses alter the microbes that live in our nose and mouth (the “microbiome”) and whether this could explain why some older adults get more respiratory infections such as colds, the flu, and pneumonia.
