From Appleton teen to Microsoft president, Brad Smith draws support, values from Wisconsin childhood

While attending Appleton West High School, Brad Smith never imagined he'd work for a big company. He thought he'd be a lawyer, a politician or a diplomat.
"I sometimes joke that, in fact, my job involves all three," Smith told the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin in a phone interview to promote an upcoming book-release event at Lawrence University.
Now 60, Smith is president of a little outfit — you might have heard of it — called Microsoft.

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) is launching a new website to help connect new and existing businesses in Wisconsin with the buyers, suppliers and service providers they need. The original Wisconsin Supply Chain Marketplace was the result of a collaboration between WEDC and the New North, the regional economic development organization covering the 18 counties in northeast Wisconsin. Due to the tremendous positive response and desire to offer the directory on a statewide scale, New North and WEDC worked together to expand the platform to support all regions in assisting supplier and buyer connections while helping diversify.... Read More 3>

Thanks to WiSys and the Austin E. Cofrin School of Business at UWGB, the top contest prize is $500 cash. Digital Fertilizer will be providing an additional award with $100 cash. In addition, finalists are eligible for scholarships to attend the European Innovation Academy (a 6-credit, 3-week summer travel course), and they may be selected to represent UWGB in other contests for even more $! One of those contests is an all-expenses paid trip for two to pitch at the annual Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization Global Conference and Pitch Competition from October 31 – November 2 in Tampa.
