Developing Patience: A Critical Skill for Addiction Recovery
One of the lessons of the past few months in dealing with COVID-19 has been the value of developing patience. In our Family & Friends meetings here at SMART, we often stress the importance of patience. Why? Because we recognize that it takes time for change to happen.

Research shows us that the stages of change are not linear. We make change in a seesaw manner. Any kind of change is hard. We think about it, change our mind, wrestle with ambivalence. Even after the commitment is firm, we most often act in a seesaw fashion as well. One day we’re successful and then we falter. We eat that hot fudge sundae after an entire week of strict dieting. Old habits die hard. It requires patience with ourselves and the nature of change.

Continue reading why patience is important in recovery in this article by Kathy Lang, a SMART Family & Friends Facilitator.

When Dennis Rosenfeld of LaGrangeville, New York, realized he needed help, he found it through SMART Recovery. SMART worked so well for Dennis that he decided to give back. He became an online volunteer in 2017. Dennis now facilitates four meetings a week and has been a member of the SMART Recovery Online (SROL) Leadership Team since 2018. He says SMART meetings offer “security, support, and safety”.

PODCAST RELEASE
Build the Kind of Life You Don’t Want to Relapse From
Charles True has been building the kind of life he doesn’t want to relapse from for many years. His project work has taken him around the world including China, Russia, and the United Kingdom. One of his most impactful projects is the InsideOut® program. InsideOut is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program for substance abuse treatment (offender rehab) in correctional settings and is based around the 4-Point Program® of SMART Recovery.

Charles partnered with Ron Lott and together they facilitate the InsideOut program in the Houston, Texas, prisons. They have also co-authored the book Successful Life Skills, which they say is the epitome of what the recovery movement represents. Charles and Ron are adapting the book to reach a broader audience beyond those struggling with addiction. Charles said people have been asking for a new version of the book and he and Ron are making it happen.

Charles lives by the motto, “turn your life into a project, always have a purpose, and wake up grateful.” The SMART community is very grateful for the work he and Ron are doing.

Charles Novak
Charles Novak, MS, MLADC, learned about rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) while in prison. The approach to overcoming addiction made sense to him, but when his five-year sentence ended, Novak discovered there wasn’t a similar treatment readily available. “There only seemed to be 12-step programs,” he recalls. While studying to be an addictions counselor, he learned more about SMART Recovery. And it really clicked.

Read more about how Charles shares the SMART message with those in his community.
