BACK IN THE DAY: A WILBUR HISTORY IN PARTS, by Dr. Richard Miller

It was December, 1966. The waves crashing on the shores of Big Sur were breath-taking. I was on holiday from the University of Michigan, where I was a new faculty member in the department of psychology. I was in Big Sur at the invitation of Dr. Fritz Perls to come study with him at a new retreat center called Esalen, named after the indigenous people of the Big Sur coast. I spent three weeks studying with Dr. Perls and, in April of 1967, on summer break from teaching, I moved to Esalen for 4 months.

At Esalen I met Dick Price and we made an agreement for me to be Esalen's first resident fellow. I lived in the Round House, over the creek, with my then girlfriend, Dr. Joan Zweben.

SUMMERTIME CAMPING

“Keep close to Nature’s heart... and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” – John Muir

This quote captures the essence of summertime. In the midst of busy schedules, people take time off to flock to the great outdoors and reconnect with themselves, their loved ones, and nature. I don’t know what washes your spirit more than that!
UPCOMING WILBUR EVENTS

Dream Concert with Charlie Sweeny
August 16-17

As the summer sun sets and the cool silver moon rises above us, we gather for two overnight dreamy sound-journeys in Wilbur Meadow – traveling beyond the stars through sound and music experiences presented by AUDIO SHAMAN – in immersive 360º QUADSONIC audio. The Concerts are complimentary to all registered Wilbur guests.

Guided Meditation with Shundo
August 31-September 1

A meditation practice can transform your way of thinking and understanding, and help you to widen your perspectives. This enables you to respond rather than simply react, and allows you to find a flexibility and resilience in yourself that you may not have known how to access.
Sarana Yoga Retreats
September 20-22 and October 11-13

Join Sarana in 2019 for a weekend of breathing, chanting, asana and soaking in the healing mineral waters of Wilbur. Strengthen your practice while relaxing and rejuvenating your body and mind. You’ll step back from your daily routines and retreat to this sacred land, home to healing waters that have been used for renewal for centuries. The popular Sarana Yoga retreats at Wilbur always fill up fast.

GUEST REFLECTIONS

“We have visited Wilbur Hot Springs several times over the past few years and it never disappoints. Their community kitchen is a fabulous way to meet other soakers and everyone is generous, friendly and helpful-both staff and guests. I forgot my Peet's coffee and cream and thought my weekend would be over, but 2 different people offered me Peet's and Philz coffee from the Bay area and even shared their half and half with me--saving the day!!! The tubs are the ideal way to reflect, meditate and have serious quiet time. But, if you want conversation time there is the pool and an additional flume/tub just for socializing. This weekend we cooked our own food (which is stored in conveniently located refrigerators and shelves behind the kitchen), but we have also attended a guest chef weekend where a fabulous chef cooks locally sourced gourmet meals and all you have to do is read a book, soak in the tubs, do some yoga, get a massage or go for a hike. The land is beautiful and magical. There are hiking trails and biking trails and so many spaces to have quiet moments in nature. Recently, wild ponies showed up and we were able to commune with them on a hike between soaks! Speaking of the soaks--the water at Wilbur is a truly healing experience. We also appreciated the newly built cabins which offered simplicity, quiet and comfort!! Don't forget to bring your own robes and towels and slippers or flip flops to make your time at the tubs easy! You will not regret a trip to Wilbur Hot Springs. It feels out of this world because it truly is!!”
