Wow, it really has been another packed month at Staf!
I was so pleased to see 200 of you at our sold-out National Conference at the Science Centre. I’m sure those of you who were there will agree what a great day it was.
Now we want to take the next step towards embedding trauma-responsive practice across Scotland with a special event, ‘A Day with Dr Karen Treisman’ on 8 May 2019. Get all the details and sign up here.
This month Staf also received a commendation at the Howard League Community Awards, with the Centre for Youth Justice Scotland, for our work on responding to offending in residential childcare.
I really look forward to this strong partnership with CYCJ deepening in the future as we get going on a new project with them in the New Year.
At Staf, we’re stepping up our efforts to put rights at the heart of our work. So on 20 November we marked UN Children’s Day by thinking about how our work helps children and young people realise their rights. Read the detail below.
Lastly, I want to thank Mike Rodden for his work as he retires from his role chairing our Supported Lodgings and Supported Carers Focus Group – a role he has carried out voluntarily after retiring in 2015. Mike is a powerful advocate for young people making the transition to independence and adulthood.

More than a week on from our conference and we're still buzzing with the energy and the enthusiasm you generated in Glasgow.

| | New Research: Life Changes Trust report on stigma A new ScotCen Panel attitudes survey, commissioned by the Life Changes Trust, was published this month. It found that while most people are generally very positive towards care experienced young people, stigma still exists. Find the results in full here. |
| | Your Voice At Staf we aim to listen, reflect and act on the views of our members. This month there has been some interest in the process for care leavers accessing their records. This was prompted by the story of Ryan McCuaig, which you can read here.
We are keen to look beyond the headlines and represent the experience of Social Workers on the issue. We've been told already that in some areas the process is ad-hoc but that workers are allocated to support care leavers through the process. | | We are all increasingly aware of how trauma and adversity in our early years can have an impact throughout our lives. Now we need to turn that awareness into lasting cultural change.
Following on from her fantastic speech at our National Conference, Highly Specialist Psychologist Dr Karen Treisman will now lead this special day-long event to give you the tools you need to support a trauma-informed organisational culture.
Dr Treisman will take us through the four Rs of a trauma-informed system, where we realise the impact of trauma; recognise its signs; resist re-traumatisation; and respond by fully infusing trauma knowledge into everything they do. |

| | Our Care Leavers into Employment focus group tackles the issues faced by young people in both accessing and sustaining employment.- At our last meeting, we explored solutions to a range of key employment issues.
- For this coming meeting, we will take a deeper dive into transport and 'soft outcomes' specifically: please get in touch with lewis@staf.scot if you have any good practice you would like to share in these areas!
- From the practice collated and the discussions at the forthcoming meeting, we will seek to influence change in national policy.
