Subject: Staf's December e-News

Dear Friend,

Wow, it really has been another packed month at Staf!

I was so pleased to see 200 of you at our sold-out National Conference at the Science Centre. I’m sure those of you who were there will agree what a great day it was.

Now we want to take the next step towards embedding trauma-responsive practice across Scotland with a special event, ‘A Day with Dr Karen Treisman’ on 8 May 2019. Get all the details and sign up here.

This month Staf also received a commendation at the Howard League Community Awards, with the Centre for Youth Justice Scotland, for our work on responding to offending in residential childcare.

I really look forward to this strong partnership with CYCJ deepening in the future as we get going on a new project with them in the New Year.

At Staf, we’re stepping up our efforts to put rights at the heart of our work. So on 20 November we marked UN Children’s Day by thinking about how our work helps children and young people realise their rights. Read the detail below.

Lastly, I want to thank Mike Rodden for his work as he retires from his role chairing our Supported Lodgings and Supported Carers Focus Group – a role he has carried out voluntarily after retiring in 2015. Mike is a powerful advocate for young people making the transition to independence and adulthood.

Have a great Christmas and a very happy New Year.

All the best,

Norma

National Conference - Healing from Trauma and Moving On

More than a week on from our conference and we're still buzzing with the energy and the enthusiasm you generated in Glasgow.

We hope those who attended left with the same determination that we now have to deliver truly trauma-informed services across Scotland.

Watch this great video that perfectly captures the atmosphere on the day.
Delivering children's rights every day
How well do you know your UN Convention on the Rights of the Child? On Universal Children's Day we took the opportunity to look at how we're contributing to delivering them through our work. Read our quick blog here.
Your Christmas Book List
It's not too late to ask Santa for a new book for Christmas, which is great because these five books should definitely be on your 2019 reading list. Get our Book Week Scotland reading list here.
Staf and CYCJ receive commendation
Staf, along with the Centre for Youth and Criminal Justice, was nominated for an award at the Howard League Community Awards on Wednesday – we didn’t win but we received a commendation! Get the detail on our website.
New Research: Life Changes Trust report on stigma
A new ScotCen Panel attitudes survey, commissioned by the Life Changes Trust, was published this month. It found that while most people are generally very positive towards care experienced young people, stigma still exists. Find the results in full here.
Your Voice
At Staf we aim to listen, reflect and act on the views of our members. This month there has been some interest in the process for care leavers accessing their records. This was prompted by the story of Ryan McCuaig, which you can read here.

We are keen to look beyond the headlines and represent the experience of Social Workers on the issue. We've been told already that in some areas the process is ad-hoc but that workers are allocated to support care leavers through the process. Tell us what happens in your area by emailing us at liam@staf.scot.
A Day with Dr. Karen Treisman
Wednesday 8th May 2019 | 9.30am - 4pm, Glasgow
We are all increasingly aware of how trauma and adversity in our early years can have an impact throughout our lives. Now we need to turn that awareness into lasting cultural change.

Following on from her fantastic speech at our National Conference, Highly Specialist Psychologist Dr Karen Treisman will now lead this special day-long event to give you the tools you need to support a trauma-informed organisational culture.

Dr Treisman will take us through the four Rs of a trauma-informed system, where we realise the impact of trauma; recognise its signs; resist re-traumatisation; and respond by fully infusing trauma knowledge into everything they do.
Save the date - we're bringing Dr Bruce Perry to Scotland!
In partnership with other organisations, we are hosting an International Child Trauma Conference - More than My Trauma - in 2020, featuring world-renowned trauma expert Dr Bruce Perry. Our partners for the event are Kibble, Children in Scotland, Clackmannanshire Educational Psychology Service, Aberlour and Seamab.

Be the first to get the details as they're announced - sign up to the mailing list today.

Listen: Dr. Rangan Chatterjee talks with Dr. Gabor Maté to discuss a range of issues including: addiction; childhood trauma; symptoms of childhood trauma; what we can be done about childhood trauma; and how society can be changed.
