What Holistic and Conventional Vets Agree on

The immune system, and what you can OR can't do to help it, are an endless topic of debate.

All of us agree ( conventional veterinarians, and holistic veterinarians alike), that the immune system is key in having a healthy pet.

Those with compromised immune systems are ill more often.

The immune system can over-react and the result is chronic itching, scratching, ear infections and hair loss.

The immune system can under-react, with the result being things like repeated skin or bladder infections.

Either way, it is important to have a healthy immune system.

About Colostrum

Colostrum is the first milk produced after giving birth. It is filled with immune protective nutrients, such as immunoglobulins which provide immediate protection.

Then there are other immune supportive nutrients in colostrum such as:

Transforming Growth Factor Beta: Stimulates growth and repair of the gastro-intestinal tract.

Epidermal Growth Factor: Biochemically regulates cellular growth, cellular division and cell type. Fosters rapid tissue repair.

Glutathione: Powerful antioxidant that offers protection to cells from free radicals.

Interferons: Specialized proteins that inhibit replication of viruses within cells throughout the body.

The question of absorption

The conventional arguments can be summed up as claiming that colostrum supplements are broken down in the stomach, and not able to be absorbed, hence they are of 'questionable value'

Yet they are an increasing number of studies that find they are helping- clearly they are of value, and the 'not absorbed' argument is losing some of its merit.

Consider these studies:


A placebo-controlled, double-blind study by Huppertz et al (J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr. 1999 Oct;29(4):452-6) showed that children suffering from diarrhea due to E. coli bacteria benefited from supplementation with bovine colostrum. Korhonen et al (J Appl Bacteriol. 1995 Jun;78(6):655-62) showed that antibodies in bovine colostrum were effective in killing Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria responsible for causing the majority of gastric ulcers.



A study by Playford et al (Gut. 1999 May;44(5):653-8) showed that the growth factors in bovine colostrum may prevent the stomach pains that are commonly associated with taking NSAID arthritis medications. They concluded that “bovine colostrum could provide a novel, inexpensive approach for the prevention and treatment of the injurious effects of NSAIDs on the gut and may also be of value for the treatment of other ulcerative conditions of the bowel.”
