Do Not Be Afraid – Jennifer Woodley
“When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified.” John 6:19 (NRSV)
Why, if the disciples knew the man coming towards them was Jesus, were they afraid? What was it about Jesus that alarmed them? Perhaps it was His unexpected behavior, so unfamiliar to them, that caused the disciples not to recognize Jesus at all. Surely it was only ghosts that could behave like this!
Walking on water was yet another part of Jesus that the men had yet to recognize and become familiar with. Then, once they heard the reassuring words of their friend, “It is I, do not be afraid” (verse 20), their hearts were filled with calmness and courage.
What is our loving Savior doing in our lives just now that is difficult to understand and may cause us to doubt or fear? In what new way might Christ be showing Himself to us that is unfamiliar? As the disciples discovered, not everything Jesus does is ‘normal’ or ‘expected’ behavior.
Let’s remember that He is a phenomenal God whose ways may not make sense to us. Yet where Jesus is there is no need to fear. He comes to us in the midst of turbulence to bring reassurance and dispel our fears. The care of Jesus will provide for us, will defend us against all dangers, and guard and protect us from all evil.
