SUCCESS STORY
Meet Lisa K
A real life Healthful Life MD success story!

After participating in the Weight Watchers program on and off for years, I was growing progressively more frustrated. Despite my efforts, I was failing to find lasting results in my weight loss journey. I knew the importance of achieving a healthy weight and was committed to finding a solution. I finally confided in my primary care physician and was referred to Healthful Life MD’s medical weight loss program.

Getting the courage to make the initial phone call was probably the most difficult part of the entire process. When I finally picked up the phone and called Healthful Life MD, I immediately felt comfortable. Dr. Abby was extremely compassionate and caring. She was knowledgeable and had the experience I knew was important to help me with long-term weight loss goals. After the call, I had a sense of hope and excitement I hadn’t felt in years. READ MORE>>

What does sleep have to do with it?
By Amy Robinson Ikelheimer, Ph.D.
Health Psychologist, Behavioral Health Specialist

Modern culture minimizes the important role sleep plays in overall wellness. Sleep is often viewed as a luxury rather than a necessity. Neglecting sleep can even be encouraged by those who believe that fewer hours of sleep mean more productive hours. The truth is, sleep is just as important to health as diet and exercise. Finding the right balance of these elements is essential to creating a solid foundation for your body. Intuitively, we know this. We know we feel better when we are doing these things, but for various reasons we just don’t. Many times it takes a major life event, like an illness, to wake us up and encourage us to find a balance of healthy diet, sleep and exercise.

So why is lack of sleep such a problem?
Lack of sleep negatively impacts many areas of life. Not only is a person likely to feel tired, lethargic, and run down, poor sleep can have a negative impact on mood, leaving people feeling more depressed, irritable and anxious than usual. Difficulty concentrating, decreased motivation, compromised immune system and weight gain due to physiological and behavioral factors are common among those who habitually neglect sleep. Unfortunately, the negative impact of poor sleep can feed into a vicious cycle–not being able to sleep is stressful and the experience of stress can be primary factor disturbing sleep. READ MORE >>
DR. ABBY APPROVED RECIPE
Homemade Hazelnut-Chocolate Spread

Making your own nut or seed butter spreads at home is a great way to provide the whole family with a healthy alternative to store bought options.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups roasted, skinned hazelnuts
  • 2 oz 70% chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil
Skin hazelnuts by blanching or roasting and rubbing the skins off with a tea towel. This is a time consuming process, but the most cost-effective way to remove the skins of the nuts which can be bitter. You can also buy hazelnuts already skinned, blanched (I find them in bulk online and store them in the freezer until use). Roast nuts in a 350 degree oven until the oils start to come out and they have slightly turned color, usually 5-10 minutes. Melt the chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave by heating on high 20 seconds at ta time and stirring in between. Blend the roasted hazelnuts in a powerful blender or food processor until smooth. Add the melted chocolate and coconut oil mixture and blend until incorporated. Store in the refrigerator.
