The second annual ADFF:DC is scheduled for February 21-24 at the National Building Museum and will be presented by the Revada Foundation. We will be screening 25 fantastic films from 11 countries over four days. At the museum, we'll set up three theaters:* The Pension Commissioner's Suite - transformed into an intimate 75-seat theater * The Auditorium - accommodating 150 people * The Great Hall's West Wing — with projection equipment supplied by SONY. The audio will be Silent Disco technology and the audience will be listening with wireless headphones. It's an amazing way to experience a film. The image below is from last year's ADFF:DC. |

Frank Gehry: Building Justice tells the story of architect Frank Gehry’s investigation into prison design as a subject for the best architecture students in the United States. The film follows Gehry as he arranges two ‘master’ studios at the invitation of George Soros and his Open Society Foundation — one at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, the other at the Yale School of Architecture. In collaboration with Susan Burton of the “New Way of Life Reentry Project” in Compton, California, Gehry and his students explore all aspects of prison design, learning first-hand the design flaws of prison life from women who have been incarcerated in the worst American prisons.

This is the story of Leslie Robertson, the lead structural engineer of the World Trade Center — a man who oversaw the construction of the tallest building on the planet at the time, and is haunted by its collapse and the events of 9/11. This bond with humanity solidified his place in American history. It’s a film about innovation, wind engineering and visionary collaborations. It's a film about Robertson, the pacifist/activist and his fight for human rights. And finally, it’s a film about the woman engineer who loved and emboldened him, expanded his worldview and ultimately saved him.

| Mies on Scene. Barcelona in two acts

One of the most famous architectural works of the 20th century had disappeared for more than 50 years. But its image still exists in the minds of many generations of architects, becoming one of their greatest influences.
Eight months after opening, the German Pavilion for the Barcelona International Exhibition of 1929 was disassembled. In 1986, after years of perseverance, it was reconstructed exactly in the same place. The existence of the pavilion and its creators remains surrounded by myths and stories, statements and questions. This documentary starts with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designing the mise-en-scène that would change the course of history.
After the screening, Dietrich Neumann, professor at Brown University and author of upcoming books on the Barclona Pavilion and a Meis biography, will have a conversation with architect and Director of Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC) Susan Piedmont-Palladino. | Francis Kéré: An Architect Between

The work of Francis Kéré is at the forefront of a paradigm shift within design. Kéré is globally-renowned for using his craft to improve social, economic and political environments in his native Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, and in numerous other countries.
Globally, people are turning to designers to address intractable problems — from poverty to climate change. Kéré seeks to do just this, using a mix of low-tech and high design and working in partnership with the communities for whom he builds. This film documents several projects Kéré has built or begun in the past 15 years, and shows the architect in action between Burkina Faso and Germany, where he is attempting to build a community performance center for Syrian refugees.

Operation Jane Walk is based on the dystopian multiplayer shooter in Tom Clancy’s "The Division". The game’s digital war zone is appropriated with the help of an artistic operation. While walking through the post-apocalyptic city, issues such as architecture history, urbanism and the game developer’s interventions into the urban fabric are discussed. The film explores the possibilities of new media technologies and shows new approaches towards the medium of documentary films. |
